We’re proud to be supporting next month’s Global Regional Road Safety Observatories (GRRSO) Dialogue on Powered Two-Wheeler Safety on 11 and 12 October in Manila.

The hybrid event will bring together an unprecedented range of global experts and practitioners to advance critical conversations to address deaths and serious injuries resulting from motorcycle crashes in low and middle-income countries (LMICs).

The Dialogue is hosted by the Asia-Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO) and Ibero-American Road Safety Observatory (OISEVI), and supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), FIA Foundation, Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF) of the World Bank, Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP), iRAP, Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), Global Regional Road Safety Observatories, Towards Zero Foundation, The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Powered two-wheelers are very vulnerable on our roads and infrastructure plays an important role in the safe system to protect them on their journey.

iRAP’s Big Data Tool shares insights of our partners’ assessment of 358,000km of roads across 54 countries and shows that 67 per cent of travel rated only 1 to 2-stars for motorcyclists. 99% of assessed roads did not have a dedicated motorcycle lane to separate powered two-wheelers from other vehicular traffic, a particular issue in LMICs where motorcycles constitute a significant percentage of the vehicle fleet on roads.

GRRSO Dialogue on Powered Two-Wheeler Safety – 11-12 October

From 11-12 October, APRSO and OISEVI will co-host a hybrid and interactive expert programme on motorcycle safety for LMICs, with a focus on countries for which motorcycling is the dominant road transport mode. It will provide a unique opportunity to address issues relating to countries and cities where powered two-wheelers (PTW) are the predominant form of transport. A key feature of the event will be the conduct of a series of dialogues on some of the most challenging issues facing motorcycle safety practitioners and advocates. Key global experts will directly engage with participants to identify evidence-based interventions to address the unacceptable loss of life due to motorcycle crashes in LMICs.

The APRSO Annual Meeting – October 13

The Asia-Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO) Annual Meeting will follow on October 13. APRSO is a regional forum on road safety data, policies and practices. Its mandate is to enhance the protection of human life on the roads across Asia and the Pacific through generating robust road safety data; undertaking analysis; and developing policies for road safety actions in Asia and the Pacific member countries.  APRSO was established by a group of international development organizations – The World Bank (WB), Fédération Internationale de l’ Automobile (FIA), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the International Transport Forum (ITF) and The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UK Aid through the Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF). ADB serves as the secretariat for APRSO.
