Enhanced Efficiency: Your Updated SR4D Tool is Ready

As part of our commitment to continuous improvement and supporting the Global Decade of Action for Road Safety, we would like to remind you of the series of technical updates and recent bug fixes for the Star Rating for Designs (SR4D) web app.

These enhancements to the SR4D web app were specifically introduced to boost your efficiency, flexibility, and overall experience when assessing existing roads.

We want to thank our partners and users who participated in previous testing and piloting phases. Your feedback was crucial, and we are happy to confirm that known bugs have been addressed, resulting in a more stable and reliable platform.

Key Updates Designed for a Better Workflow

The updated SR4D tool delivers several strategic enhancements that simplify key steps in the Star Rating assessment process.

  1. New Flexibility in Star Rating Generation

To support users to refine and update their assessment smoothly and efficiently the Quality Assurance (QA) process has been revised. Users are now able to generate Star Ratings prior to submission for before final QA sign-off. This means that the Star Rating for a road design can be generated at an earlier stage and the results used as part of its refinement.

  1. Preventing Data Loss and Boosting Efficiency

Coding bulk data is now safer than ever. A new dialog prompt has been added to flag unsaved changes when using the “Code all Tabs to All Segments” function. This simple but critical addition ensures no data is lost during your most intensive coding sessions, protecting your work and saving you time.

  1. Global Usability and Accessibility

To better serve our international community, we’ve updated attribute labels from “left/right” to the more universal “driver-side/passenger-side.” Furthermore, the tool now includes an option to clearly define drive-on-left or drive-on-right in your datasets, improving clarity and adaptability regardless of your location. Small updates like rounding distances in menus to two decimal places also contribute to a cleaner, more precise user interface.

The Path Forward: Training and the V1 Switch-Off

Updated Training is Available Now: To help you get the most out of these new features, the updated SR4D training course in English, French, and Bahasa Indonesia is now available. We encourage all current and new users to take this course to quickly master the enhanced workflow. We are working hard to update our supporting languages for both the tool and the training materials, with a rollout expected in 2026.

ACTION REQUIRED: SR4D V1 Retires on 1 March 2026 – As we focus all development and support efforts on the updated, improved version, the older SR4D V1 web app will be retired on 1 March 2026. On this date, V1 will no longer be supported or functional.

We strongly advise all users to begin the transition to the updated SR4D tool immediately. The updated tool is more efficient and stable.

Transition recommendations:

  • New projects: Use the updated SR4D tool.
  • Projects in progress: If you are partway through an SR4D assessment using V1, export the road upload file from SR4D V1, upload it into the updated SR4D tool, then reload the design files.
  • Completed assessments: Results from SR4D V1 will remain available in ViDA; however, the data used to create them will be lost. If you need to retain this data, export the road upload file from SR4D V1, upload it into the updated SR4D tool, then reload the design files.

Driving Sustainable Transport and the Decade of Action

The SR4D web app is a key part of our vision for a world free of high-risk roads and supports the move towards sustainable transport networks.

SR4D not only enables the application of the iRAP Star Rating methodology to designs but also to existing roads, providing safety professionals with the critical data needed to prioritise upgrades and save lives. By identifying and improving high-risk locations for all road users—including vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists – it directly contributes to creating infrastructure that is safe and inclusive for all.

As the world prepares for the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035), SR4D plays a vital role in aligning safety with sustainability—ensuring that transport systems are not only efficient but also fundamentally safe for all users. Every assessment completed using this updated tool directly contributes to the targets of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 – specifically, by helping us to achieve the goal of 3-star or better on every road. By using these improved features, you’re not just coding roads; you’re driving the data-led design of safer infrastructure globally, focusing investment where it has the biggest impact on preventing death and serious injury.

The SR4D web app is part of the suite of tools and functions available within ViDA.

ViDAis iRAP’s free-to-air online platform. It is the data processing engine for Star Ratings, FSI Estimates and Investment Plans, hosting data and analysing results, and the portal for iRAP’s tools.

iRAP’s methodology and specification manuals are fundamentally linked with the tools available in ViDA, which serves as the central data processing engine and online platform for all iRAP’s tools. The methodology measures road safety based on over 50 road attributes and underpins key outputs like Star Ratings, Fatal and Serious Injury (FSI) Estimates, and Investment Plans. This integrated approach ensures that practitioners can use the guidance in the manuals to understand the methodology, and then utilize the tools in ViDA to objectively measure and improve road safety, ultimately making designs safer and more impactful.
