iRAP congratulates the Government of Vietnam on the release of their National Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 with 3-star or better targets set for new and existing roads, in line with UN Global Road Safety Performance Targets 3 and 4.

 

Approved by the Prime Minister, the Strategy includes for 100% of newly built national highways and provincial roads to be grade III or higher and 75% of the total length of the national highway network to reach 3 stars or more according to the standards of iRAP’s global road traffic safety assessment programme.

 

With a vision to 2045, the Strategy aims to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by road traffic crashes annually by 5-10 percent in a sustainable manner.

In March 2019, the Vietnamese Government became the first to make specific pledges of action to meet the road safety SDG target by 2030, at a ‘Round the World Roundtable’ in Hanoi attended by UN Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt. Vietnam’s Minister of Transport handed a baton containing the nation’s commitments to meet the Targets.

 

According to iRAP’s Vaccines for Roads Big Data Tool, achieving greater than 75% of travel on 3-star or better roads for all road users in Vietnam by 2030 stands to save 8,451 lives every year with an economic benefit of USD$82.4 billion – $22 for every $1 spent.
