Summary
Hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and organised by the China Highway & Transportation Society (CHTS), the World Transport Convention (WTC) 2018 was held at the China National Convention Centre, Beijing from 18 – 21 June 2018. With the theme of “Better Transport, Better World”, 5,000 participants attended WTC 2018 consisting of keynotes and technical presentations in the areas of highway engineering, structure engineering, rail transit, air transportation, water transportation, transportation planning and traffic engineering. Additionally, over 30 workshops were facilitated covering topics such as the development of long-span bridges, high-speed rail technology, big data, future transport, intelligent transportation, shaping ecomomies and green mobility.
During WTC 2018, the Belt and Road International Transport Summit was held, with the theme ‘Safety, Efficiency, Green, Intelligent’.

- iRAP technology to enhance traffic safety and future plans of action – Rob McInerney, iRAP CEO. This presentation described how well founded research can be immediately deployed into the star rating model and innovation shared globally. Star Rating for Schools, CycleRAP, Vaccines for Roads and Star Ratings for the self-driving car were just some of the partner innovations shared.
- Global road safety and 3-star or better silk roads – Rob McInerney, iRAP CEO (as part of the BRITA Summit). This presentation identified the economic opportunity for BRITA to lead on 5-star motorways and 4-star roads linking Europe, Asia and Africa.
