Dr Suzy Charman, Executive Director of United Kingdom RAP Lead RSF presents the awards on 7 March

Last week, the 2023 National Highways Industry Awards recognised two projects that have used the iRAP approach to model and improve the safety case.  The two projects have been supported by the Road Safety Foundation, United Kingdom RAP programme lead.

The A21 Safety Package (Jacobs and National Highways) won the award for “exceptional contribution to road user safety”. The project is an important example of a safety scheme that has been developed on the basis of the iRAP data including telematics speed data, and the business case has been based on iRAP modelling.

The A417 ‘Missing Link’ Project (National Highways, Kier and Arup) won the award for “good road design” and utilised the Star Rating for Designs approach.

Executive Director of the Road Safety Foundation and United Kingdom RAP Lead Dr Suzy Charman said, “It was a real privilege to co-present the safety awards with Mike Wilson, Chief Highways Engineer at National Highways.  To see such high quality projects recognised and for these to include projects that have utilised the iRAP approach is a clear sign that National Highways has really started to embed iRAP and the Safe System in practice.”

Now entering their 3rd year, the National Highways Industry Awards 2023 celebrate successes and best practice performance in safety, customer service and delivery across the authority’s strategic road network – England’s 4,500 miles of motorways and major A-roads.
