iRAP has launched a Star Rating Certification Programme to help road owners celebrate the life-saving impact of their investments in safer roads.

Star Rating Certification verifies achievement of 3-star or better safety ratings on road networks for vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, pedestrians and/or bicyclists. It provides a communications opportunity to celebrate the achievement of a Star Rating target and formally verifies the safety status of a road or design.

A pilot of the initiative has already seen success celebrated in China recognizing Yangpu District Transport Commission’s achievement of a 5-star safety rating for bicyclists and pedestrians in Beijing, PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk’s achievement of 3-Star or Better for vehicle occupants on Indonesian toll roads, and Transurban’s surpassing of national targets on its Australia-wide network, with the majority achieving 4-star for vehicle occupants by vehicle kilometres travelled.

Certification is a voluntary process and any road or design that has been assessed using the iRAP Star Rating methodology is eligible for Star Rating Certification.

As road owners, investors and designers increasingly seek to support the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, official certification helps them to celebrate success and raise awareness about their commitment to the Global Plan and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

For example:

  • A road authority may request a Star Rating Certification for a length of highway that now achieves a minimum 3-Stars for vehicle occupants;
  • A municipality may request a Star Rating Certification for the redesign of a street which achieves a 5-Stars for pedestrians and bicyclists; or
  • A concession road operator may request Certification of the distribution of Star Ratings for vehicle occupants and motorcyclists across its network.

Once the Star Rating results are certified by experts in the iRAP Team, applicants are presented with a Star Rating Certificate, datasheet and licence to use Certification Branding promoting their success in communications such as roadside billboards and signage, newspaper advertising, social media posts and publications. Certifications are also promoted to iRAP’s more than 20,000 partners around the world!

Applications are now open!

We look forward to helping you celebrate your 3-star or better success!
