iRAP and the Australian Transport Accident Commission (TAC) partnered late last year to produce a “Road to Zero through the Safe System Approach” exhibit and now offer it for partners to use world-wide.

Launched at Safety 2022: the 14th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion in Adelaide, the exhibit features a 6m x 2.8m graphics wall showcasing the necessary safe system elements to achieve zero road deaths – 5-star road users in 5-star vehicles on 5-star roads, travelling at safe speeds. It also can feature an animation presenting the Role of Safe Roads in the Safe System.

Victoria’s road safety journey since 1970 is showcased as an example for other countries and partners to learn from. In Victoria, an 80 per cent reduction in annual road deaths has been achieved with the implementation of a range of road user behaviour, enforcement, education, legislation, and infrastructure interventions over time.

At its launch in Adelaide, the exhibit was complemented with a range of interactives allowing stand visitors to take Victoria’s road safety journey from 1970 – 2050 via virtual reality headsets, test their knowledge on speed and crash outcomes and explore iRAP’s Safety Insights Explorer to see how safe their country’s roads are, the human and economic impact of injury, the road attributes that matter and the Business Case for Safer Roads.

iRAP and TAC staff were on hand to answer questions and provide a range of information resources on iRAP in Countries, Star Rating for Schools, CycleRAP, Star Rating for Designs, RAP Tools and TAC’s Road to Zero Education Complex.

The iRAP-TAC Road to Zero through the Safe System Approach exhibit draws on materials from the world-first Road to Zero Education Complex at the Melbourne Museum in Australia which engages young people, the community and road safety stakeholders in innovative, experiential education, supporting the goals of Victoria’s approach to road safety.

The Road to Zero Education Complex was awarded a 2021 Prince Michael International Road Safety Award recognising its success and attraction of many visitors, especially young people, and a 2020 Museums and Galleries National Award for Learning, Interpretation and Audience Engagement. Road to Zero, developed by TAC in partnership with Melbourne Museum, is also offered as a free curriculum-based education programme to high school students via school visitations.
