ARRB Systems Africa – Bridging the Gap for a safer tomorrow

In South Africa, approximately one million road traffic accidents are reported each year, which results in 40 fatalities and at least 20 permanent disabilities every day.  This equates to 25.1 fatalities per 100 000 population. Recent studies indicate that traffic crashes on South African roads are estimated to cost in excess of R164 billion, or 3.5% of local GDP, which is significant for any developing nation.

ARRB (Automated Road Rehabilitation Business) Systems, a global leader in providing pavement surveillance equipment and data collection services to all road industry stakeholders, has incorporated the iRAP as part of their service offering to help tackle this problem in South Africa, and the greater African continent.

With its dedicated team of fully accredited individuals, ARRB Systems has successfully undertaken iRAP star-rating assessments for two provincial road agencies, viz. the KwaZulu-Natal and Free State Road Departments. Approximately 14 500 kilometres of high-volume roads have been star-rated to determine and understand the inherent level of risk exhibited on these provincial road networks. In undertaking the road safety field surveys, ARRB Systems’ Hawkeye 2000 and Processing Toolkit – a Class B accredited inspection system, was utilized to capture georeferenced images at 20-meter intervals and undertake the subsequent coding.

The data was analysed in ViDA and reported to the road agencies who have accepted the findings as a veracious account of the present road conditions and are presently implementing the countermeasures recommended from these iRAP assessments.

“We are the first company in South Africa to employ a dedicated team of twelve iRAP accredited personnel”, says Verushka Balaram, Head of Road Safety at ARRB Systems. “As an iRAP accredited supplier ARRB Systems is a key role player in addressing road safety head-on in South Africa.”
