From Street View to big data and the internet of things, safer city streets to strategic highway safety, impact investment to insurance models for a safer future – the latest global innovations in road safety technology, financing, design, planning and transport delivery to save lives will be showcased at the Vision Zero and Innovation Workshop to be held 28-29 November in Washington DC.

Hosted by the International Road Safety Assessment Programme (iRAP), Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and World Resources Institute (WRI), the closed invitation event will bring together 200 global partners with a key role in shaping global action to achieve Vision Zero and the UN Global Road Safety Targets.

iRAP CEO Rob McInerney said based on current trauma levels, an estimated 400 million people will be killed and injured on our roads by 2030.

“There is only one acceptable vision – Vision Zero – and to achieve it we must be ambitious, be innovative and act at a scale necessary to make a difference, “Mr McInerney said.

“With 68% of the world’s population projected to live in urban areas by 2050, the march to automated vehicles, explosion of big data, and smart technologies putting panoramic street views in the palm of our hands, the potential and demand to save lives and cut serious injury through global innovation has never been higher.

“This Workshop will bring together some of the world’s leading decision-makers and visionaries to unveil the latest innovation, formulate partnerships and strategize 2030 action to achieve zero,” he said.

The two-day programme will include plenary addresses and interactive workshops focussed on Safer Cities, Vision Zero and iRAP Innovation, Policy Leadership and the UN Targets, Road Safety Metrics and the Road Safety Observatories, Big Data and Innovation Partnerships for the Future, Safer Roads by Policy and Design, and Health, Insurance and Road Safety Investment Innovation. Global case studies of success will be featured, including from China, Latin America, UK, Los Angeles and Mexico.

“The UN Targets and Sum4All global tracking framework have established the metrics for success and now we need to create the catalytic action called for as part of the UN Road Safety Trust Fund,” Mr McInerney said.

“Innovation will be key. Smart technology, data-driven wisdom and shared efficiencies targeting highest risk will be essential and the focus for shared learnings at this event,” he added.
