Summary

iRAP played a lead role at the 2018 International Transport Forum Summit (ITF2018), held 23-25 May in Leipzig, Germany. With this year’s theme of “Transport Safety and Security”, the annual summit is the world’s largest gathering of transport ministers and the premier global transport policy event. 1300 decision-makers from more than 74 countries attended, including 40 ministers and delegates drawn from government, business, international organisations and academia.

Programme and Presentations

Key to iRAP’s participation was the launch of Vaccines for Roads, iRAP’s new Big Data Tool. The Tool provides for the first time a health check on how safe the world’s roads are and the road attributes that matter, the projected human life and economic savings to be gained if countries meet the new UN Global Road Safety Targets, and case studies of success. The Tool unlocks insights into the world’s largest road infrastructure safety database, summarising star rating and investment plan data – over 400 million data points – based on 358,000 kilometres of roads across 54 countries covering over 700 billion vehicle kilometres of travel every year. Achieving more than 75% of travel on 3-star or better roads for all road users by 2030 will save an estimated 467,000 lives every year worldwide and 100,000 million lives and serious injuries over the 20 year life of road treatments.
