PakistanRAP is an initiative of the National Highway Authority (NHA) with support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The iRAP and ChinaRAP teams will be providing assistance to the NHA in developing the skills to conducted iRAP assessments across the national highway network.

On the 15 March, Mr Greg Smith, Managing Director – iRAP Strategic Projects, helped facilitate an introductory workshop which was hosted by NHA with around 80 participants in attendance. Participants included Jawwad Rafique Malik, Chairman, NHA; Dr. Syed Kaleem Imam, Inspector General, National Highways and Motorways Police; and Sunil Mitra, Deputy Country Director, ADB Pakistan Resident Mission.

The aim is that by the end of 2019 some 14,000km will have been assessed, safety improvement recommendations are in incorporated into road upgrade and maintenance programs, national policy targets set, and NHA engineers have high level of expertise in iRAP assessments.

iRAP’s business case for safer roads suggests this initiative in Pakistan will save approximately 4,500 lives a year, where the current situation sees approximately 30,131 annual deaths and serious injuries. https://irap.org/the-business-case-for-safer-roads/

We look forward to further development of this initiative, collaborating with the NHA and ADB to develop 3 star or better roads in Pakistan.
