iRAP was proud to join the 3rd International Transport Conference held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 11-13 April 2025. Organized by the Society of Transport Engineers Nepal (SOTEN) and the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, this significant event brought together transport professionals and stakeholders.

As an International Collaborating Partner, alongside esteemed organizations like IRF, the Asian Transport Observatory, and the East Asian Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS), iRAP actively contributed to the conference’s discussions on advancing transportation. iRAP’s Acting CEO Greg Smith, played a valuable role as a member of the advisory committee, further underscoring iRAP’s commitment to road safety in the region.

Albin Tharakan, a Road Safety Engineer based in India, represented iRAP at the conference, delivering a comprehensive presentation that highlighted the crucial work we do globally and specifically within Nepal. The session covered an overview of iRAP’s methodologies, insights into our assessments conducted in Nepal, and a detailed look at the Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) program. Furthermore, Albin showcased the impactful work of IndiaRAP and shared inspiring success stories from India, demonstrating the tangible benefits of a proactive approach to road safety.

Adding to iRAP’s presence, Greg delivered special remarks during the closing ceremony via a pre-recorded video message, reinforcing the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving safer roads for all.

The 3rd International Transport Conference provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration. iRAP’s active participation underscores our dedication to working with partners in Nepal and the wider region to implement evidence-based strategies that save lives and prevent serious injuries on the roads. We look forward to continuing our support in creating a safer transportation future.

According to iRAP’s Safety Insights Explorer, achieving UN Target 4 for greater than 75% of travel on 3-star or better roads for all road users in Nepal by 2030 stands to save an estimated 2,870 lives each year, and over 488,093 deaths and injuries over the 20-year life of road treatments, with an economic benefit of USD$860.3 million – $8.7 for every $1 spent.
