The Forum of European Road Safety Research Institutes (FERSI) will organize an online symposium: Implementing evidence-based road safety measures, removing barriers and enhancing public support. The symposium will take place on October 14, 2021, from 13:30 to 15:30 CET. It is a prelude to a physical conference on the same topic that will happen in the autumn of 2022.

The symposium will consist of three presentations on vulnerable road users, speed, and road safety management. Practitioners/decision makers who have been successful in implementing effective but sometimes controversial road safety measures will share their experience:
• Álvaro Gómez Méndez (Director of the Spanish National Road Safety Observatory) will focus on the introduction of low urban speed limits in Spain.
• Giannis Kefalogiannis (Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport in Greece) will focus on the successful Greek road safety policy in the last decade.
• Pernille Sølund Ehlers (Senior Advisor at the Danish Road Safety Council) will focus on the Danish approach to successfully promoting voluntary use of bicycle helmets.

A panel consisting of Nhan Tran (Head Safety and Mobility, Department of the Social Determinants of Health, World Health Organization), Matthew Baldwin (Deputy Director-General DG MOVE and European Coordinator for Road Safety and Sustainable Mobility, European Commission) and Astrid Linder (Research Director Traffic Safety at VTI and Adjunct Professor at the Chalmers University of Technology), together with the speakers and the audience will put the issues in an international, European and scientific perspective.
