Star Rating for Schools news from Europe: Automobile Club Moldova (ACM) has started implementing the FIA School Assessment Programme, which is based on the 10 steps presented in the FIA School Assessment Toolkit. Assessments around schools are supported by iRAP’s Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) tool.
The ACM has initiated road safety assessments around schools in Moldovan capital city Chișinău and its suburbs. Their current focus is Ștefan cel Mare Lyceum în Chișinău and two high schools in Trușeni village: Gheorghe Madan nr. 99 and Trușeni. Teachers, students, and their parents are also involved in the assessments since the aim is to get a broader understanding of the main road safety risks students face on their way to school and back home.
The activities are carried out within the “Working towards policy change for Safe School Zones” programme financed by the FIA Foundation and Eastern Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport (EASST), which is also a EuroRAP member. The ACM is amongst ten recipients of the 2021 School Assessment Programme grants, supported by the FIA Foundation. Almost 250,000€ is to be provided to ten auto clubs worldwide to support activities to protect children and young people, particularly on their journeys to school. The FIA School Assessment Programme is delivered with the support of Star Ratings for Schools (SR4S), developed by iRAP. SR4S is an evidence-based tool for measuring, managing, and communicating the risk children are exposed to on their daily journey to school. It supports quick interventions that save lives and prevent serious injuries from day one.
Rafaela Machado, Star Rating for Schools Global Coordinator, said: “iRAP is delighted to see the Automobile clubs delivering 5-star school journeys in Europe. ACM will have the opportunity to implement life-saving infrastructure for children walking to school in Moldova.”
