Presentation of proposals for Road Safety and delivery of risk maps of the Trans-European Road Network of the country was made at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport by the Institute of Road Safety (IOAS) “Panos Mylonas”. The submitted maps concern the SLAIN project (Saving Lives Assessing and Improving TEN-T Road Network Safety), prepared by the Road Safety Institute “Panos Mylonas” in collaboration with the international organization EuroRAP and partners from Italy, Spain and Croatia, and is co-financed by the European Community through the CEF Program (Connecting Europe Facility 2014-2020), with the consent of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

The object of the project is Road Safety and as a result (among others) the creation of a risk classification map of the Trans-European Road Network of Greece. This action is compatible with the directive 2008/96 of the European Parliament (which has been incorporated in the Greek Legislation with PD 104/2011 (Government Gazette 237 / A / 7-11-2011)) but also with the revision of 2019/1936 / EC where road safety assessment is foreseen.

The creation of the risk maps and the calculation of the relevant indicators was carried out according to the international methodology EuroRAP and refers to the Trans-European Road Network of the period 2015-2018 with the corresponding data available). This methodology is fully compatible and accepted by the new European Directive and other international organizations (WHO, World Bank). This allows for direct comparison between different countries, as the same methodology is applied internationally, in more than 100 countries to date. The two maps created in the framework of the SLAIN project concern the density of events and the risk index, which constitute the collective and individual level of risk of road users, respectively. yellow-green, from the highest to the lowest level of danger . The comparison of the data of the traffic accidents of the 4-year period under consideration concludes the positive result of the improvement of the Road Safety. Once again, the crucial role played by the motorway network in Greece in reducing risk indicators is highlighted – the percentage of low-risk roads has improved from 12% to 87% of the total trans-European network.

The President of the Institute, Mrs. Vasiliki Danelli-Mylonas, and executives of I.O.AS. “Panos Mylonas”, handed over the risk maps to the Ministry of Infrastructure & Transport, with Greece documenting to the European institutions the observance of its obligations.

As stated by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Giannis Kefalogiannis, “road safety is a matter of the highest priority for the current government. At the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, under the guidance of Mr. Costas Karamanlis, we seek to adopt international best practices in order to have the appropriate tools for policy-making, in cooperation with the Bodies that contribute to this effort. ”

The General Secretary of Infrastructure, Mr. George Karagiannis , receiving the maps, thanked the President of the Road Safety Institute (R.S.I.) “Panos Mylonas” for handing over the maps and expressed his satisfaction “for the work carried out by the relevant departments and the collaborators of the Ministry, for an issue which is particularly important for the strategic planning of the infrastructures in the country and for the prioritization of the interventions at the level of Road Safety. ”

According to Ms. Danelli-Mylonas, “We consider of great importance the interest of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Mr. Costas Karamanlis on the issues of Road Safety, as well as of the Deputy Minister Mr. Ioannis Kefalogiannis, the Secretary General of Infrastructure Mr. Georgios Karagiannis and Ministry Officials who participated in the discussions. Our constructive cooperation with the EuroRAP Organization, an active member of which is the I.O.AS. “Panos Mylonas” since 2010, and with partners from other European countries, as well as the full support of the Ministry of Infrastructure & Transport under the SLAIN program, are very important. Strengthening Road Safety in Greece is considerably contributing to the road safety awareness and protection of life on the roads. “We are very happy that today in our country we have a modern network of motorways that contributes to the transportation of all road users and the development of the country.”

With the adoption of the maps by the Ministry, Greece is in compliance with the requirements as said by the European Road Infrastructure Safety Management Directive (RISM). –
