The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) partnership with iRAP’s award-winning Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) programme is delivering unprecedented resources and funding to mobility clubs for safer school journeys world-wide.

Two major FIA initiatives are leveraging results – a Toolkit equipping clubs with the resources and know-how to make school journeys safer and a grants programme to upgrade high-risk school zones informed by evidence-based SR4S assessments.

A Toolkit to enable

The FIA School Assessment Toolkit, available in both English and Spanish, is a web-portal for FIA Clubs to help them identify high-risk schools, establish and conduct safety assessments, communicate results and scale-up outcomes. It provides over 30 knowledge documents, guidelines and templates to plan, resource, apply and advocate for school zone improvements that will save children’s lives by delivering a 3-star or better journey to school.

The Toolkit allows the scalability of use of SR4S among FIA Members as well as introduces the CAA’s behavioural School Zone Assessment tool.

Funding for life-saving road upgrades

The FIA Road Safety Grants Programme extends €1.2 million from the FIA Foundation annually to enable Clubs to address road safety at local level and support the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety.

For the first time, the Grant Programme is supporting FIA members to upgrade school zones through projects that apply the 10 steps of the School Assessment Toolkit and SR4S application. FIA members can apply for up to €25,000 per project, to cover the full project or co-fund other sources to upgrade at least one school zone.

Apply now

Don’t miss this unique opportunity! FIA clubs can apply by registering on the FIA Road Safety Grants portal and submitting an application by April 28.

Mr Luca Pascotto, Head of Road Safety and Global Advocacy at the FIA  said, “Partnership and cooperation are critical in making a paradigm shift toward a culture of safe mobility. The FIA School Assessment Programme is a building block of the FIA Road Safety Advocacy strategy for the new Decade of Action for Road Safety, and we are delighted that FIA Member Clubs can partner with Star Rating for Schools in this important initiative to save kids’ lives.”

Star Rating for Schools Coordinator, Ms Rafaela Machado said, “The FIA and mobility club network has enormous potential to make school journeys safer in 146 countries. We have seen the amazing work of clubs eliminating high-risk roads in local communities throughout the world and are proud to support the Toolkit and Grant Scheme to deliver safer school journeys for those most vulnerable – our kids.”

About Star Rating for Schools: Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) is an evidence-based tool for measuring, managing and communicating the risk children are exposed to on school journeys. Developed with sponsorship from FedEx, SR4S is an easy-to-use, low-cost application that harnesses the power of the iRAP Star Rating for Pedestrians and combines an Android tablet/smart phone app and a Global Reporting web application. SR4S assesses the risk to pedestrians at spot locations informing interventions and investment to save lives. It will be key to supporting the achievement of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.6 for child and adolescent pedestrian road safety. SR4S was awarded a prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in December 2018. The programme is sponsored by FedEx and supported by the FIA Foundation and 3M as a Global Programme Partner.
