Thursday 15 November 2018: The Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety (the Alliance) launched its Africa Chapter at the 1st African Road Safety Forum, in Marrakech, Morocco.

The Africa region’s economy is growing faster than any other continent. Regrettably, this success brings some serious and painful consequences: Africa has 2% of the world’s cars but 16% of the world’s road deaths, and more than 300,000 people lose their lives in road traffic crashes in the region every year, while thousands more are injured.

ITF, World Bank and FIA are working together on an African Road Safety Observatory. iRAP has been actively supporting the initiative through the compilation of key data from the Vaccines for Roads tool (www.vaccinesforroads.org).

An estimated 5 iRAP related metrics will be included in the shopping list of indicators included in the Observatory work. iRAP’s Dr Steve Lawson, Regional Director EMEA, also attended the 1st Africa Road Safety Forum where the indicators work was discussed along with other road safety policy priorities across the region.

During the Africa Road Safety Forum, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Roads Administration of Morocco and the International Road Assessment Program (iRAP). Read more here
