Perth, Australia – iRAP has proudly recognised Main Roads Western Australia and Anditi with the global 5-star Performer Award for 2025, honouring their AiRAP global leadership and the pioneering use of LiDAR and artificial intelligence to improve road safety.
The prestigious award was presented in Perth yesterday during the Australasian Road Safety Conference by iRAP’s Chief of Future Impact Rob McInerney. Receiving the award was Mr. John Erceg, the Managing Director of Main Roads WA and Mr. Peter Jamieson, the Founder and Managing Director of Anditi.
Main Roads WA and Anditi have undertaken the world’s largest AiRAP assessment on around 19,000km of Western Australian roads as part of the Austroads led AusRAP program. The innovative use of accelerated and intelligent coding of road attributes using LiDAR and imagery data has transformed the speed, accuracy and access to Star Rating and related asset management data for all staff across the agency.
The work forms part of the Australian National Road Safety Strategy targets for 80% of travel to be on 3-star or better roads by 2030. The Austroads National AusRAP Dashboard details the Star Rating results where 1-star is the least safe and 5-star is the safest. Main Roads WA have successfully achieved 82.3% of vehicle travel on 3-star or better roads which is a great outcome for road users across the state.
The Main Roads WA and Anditi team adopted an ambitious research and development approach to solving challenges along the way and making step changes in the successful detection of iRAP attributes. The project analysed the state’s national highways and state road network using mobile LiDAR and 360-degree imagery with Anditi’s iRAP Accredited RoadViewer technology and 3D Web Portal.
With analysis of over 69.3 million data attributes, the project has proven the potential of AiRAP approaches to deliver Star Rating assessments. The results are now informing evidence-based investment in infrastructure upgrades to save lives and reduce road crash injuries across the state. Follow-up Star Rating assessments will be conducted annually on 20% of the network to inform roadworks planning and track performance improvements.
The Main Roads WA success story also extends well-beyond the road safety benefits of the AiRAP assessment, with the LiDAR point cloud data delivering efficiencies, cost savings, improved safety and reduced greenhouse gas emissions across all aspects of the road agency’s business. The desktop access to the LiDAR data is streamlining a range of assessments including over-dimensional vehicle access, flood recovery projects, asset management, vegetation monitoring, environmental planning, and road crash investigation. One data collection now serving many needs and delivering value to the many staff and stakeholders of Main Roads WA.
In presenting the award, iRAP Chief of Future Impact Rob McInerney said, “As a charity, iRAP’s vision is for a world free of high-risk roads for all road users. AiRAP is an exciting global collaboration that will significantly expand the scale and frequency of Star Rating assessments around the world, ultimately enabling road authorities and their partners to save lives. Main Roads Western Australia and Anditi are at the forefront of this effort, leading the world’s largest AiRAP assessment as part of the Austroads-led AusRAP program.
“Every groundbreaking project requires a team of experts who can chart new paths, push boundaries, and have the tenacity and dedication to deliver results. Main Roads WA have been incredible in taking on this challenge. Anditi is also a global leader in AiRAP, driving its success through their in-depth exploration of source data, cutting-edge technology, streamlined processes, and rigorous quality control. This world-class initiative is a game-changer, setting a new standard for the future – a future that will fulfil iRAP’s dream to Star Rate every road on earth and help deliver the life-saving social, community, financial and economic benefits of 3-star or better roads worldwide.”
John Erceg, Managing Director Main Roads WA said, “We are delighted to receive the iRAP 5-star Performer Award for 2025. The AiRAP project is significantly enhancing our road safety and road management practices, and supporting Western Australia’s Road Safety Strategy which aims to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured by 50 to 70 per cent by 2030. I congratulate all of the talented Main Roads WA and Anditi staff who have led this innovative project that is delivering benefits to the whole organisation and road users in Western Australia.”
Peter Jamieson, Director of Anditi said, “We are proud to be forging the future for AiRAP innovation globally and to have been able to demonstrate that AiRAP coding and Star Ratings can be undertaken successfully at scale using Accelerated and Intelligent analytic techniques. Working on this innovative project with Main Roads WA has been an honour and we look forward to the knowledge gained being used to support other iRAP partners to scale their life saving assessments and action globally.”
Dr Geoff Allan, Chief Executive of Austroads said, “The Department of Main Roads Western Australia and Anditi have done something very special. The iRAP 5-Star Performer Award 2025 recognises their outstanding work. Assessing Western Australia’s state roads using AiRAP is both a safety outcome and a productivity outcome. MRWA and Anditi’s work helps make roads in Western Australia safer and provides us with a potential model for others to use.
They have made a major contribution to the AusRAP program. MRWA and Anditi have strengthened the quality and reach of nationally consistent, evidence-based data that supports improved road safety outcomes across Australia and globally. We congratulate both organisations on this exceptional accomplishment and look forward to their continued leadership in advancing road safety.”
Main Roads WA and Anditi’s AiRAP innovation, supported by iRAP, is already delivering benefits beyond the borders of Western Australia. The advances made are supporting a wide range of AiRAP partnerships including Google.org and Botnar Foundation supported partnerships to deliver safer 3-star or better journeys to school for kids in Vietnam, and safer roads with Government and development partners in the United States, Europe and Africa.
