A blog by Olivera Rozi, iRAP’s Safer Journeys Lead for Europe
As EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK kicks off, it’s a fitting moment to spotlight the crucial work being done to create safer, more sustainable urban environments. At iRAP, we are proud of our collaborative partnerships across Europe to deliver innovative road infrastructure safety solutions that benefit everyone.
European Mobility Week provides an invaluable platform to raise awareness about sustainable transport, and it’s a mission that resonates with iRAP’s vision for a world free of high-risk roads. Our focus is on making every journey a safe one.
The Critical Role of Road Infrastructure Safety
Road crashes remain a significant challenge globally, and Europe is no exception. While advancements in vehicle technology play a vital role, the design and condition of our roads are fundamental to preventing fatalities and serious injuries.
Safe road infrastructure means:
- Forgiving Roadsides: Reducing the likelihood of severe outcomes when a vehicle leaves the carriageway.
- Safe Intersections: Designing junctions to minimize conflict points and protect vulnerable road users.
- Dedicated Space for Vulnerable Road Users: Ensuring safe and convenient pathways for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Clear Signage and Markings: Providing unambiguous guidance to all road users.
At iRAP, we believe that every road death is preventable. Our star rating methodology provides a globally recognized, evidence-based system for assessing and improving the safety of road infrastructure. A 5-star road is the safest, and our goal is to help communities achieve this standard.
iRAP in Action: Urban Mobility Projects and Tools in Europe
Across Europe, iRAP’s tools and methodologies are being deployed to address specific urban mobility challenges, making cities more liveable and safer for their residents.
Driving Change with Star Ratings and Investment Plans:
Our Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) program, for instance, is empowering local authorities to identify and mitigate risks around schools, protecting our children on their daily commutes. By assessing walking and cycling routes around schools, SR4S provides clear recommendations for infrastructure upgrades that can significantly reduce the risk of crashes.
