Road safety needs all of us, and that’s why iRAP is thrilled to announce the successful recipients of our Women in Engineering Training Grants for 2025! This year, we were overwhelmed with the big response from highly committed women in engineering.

In a testament to the incredible talent and dedication we saw, we are pleased to award the largest cohort (115 successful grantees) from 35 countries—the largest group of International Women in Engineering Day (IWED) grant recipients we’ve ever had. We are excited to work with, mentor, and encourage them on their journey to make roads safer globally.

Empowering a Global Network of Road Safety Leaders 👩🏽‍💻

This selected group will receive free access to iRAP’s Star Rating Essentials and Star Rating for Designs  courses. These self-paced training programs are designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to assess road safety, develop safer road designs, and implement impactful safety measures.

Grantees will gain expertise in iRAP specification activities, enabling them to contribute to safer road infrastructure, bid competitively on projects, and join a global network of road safety professionals.

Why This Initiative Matters 💖

This initiative aims to empower over 100 female grant recipients by providing them with the support, training, and recognition needed to become active members of the global road safety community. This initiative is especially important because the road engineering is a field largely populated by men.

Gender diversity in road safety engineering is crucial for creating inclusive and effective solutions. Research shows that men and women experience road safety differently due to a range of factors. By involving more women in decision-making and design, we can address the needs of all road users and work toward eliminating high-risk roads globally. Women engineers also bring innovative approaches to solving complex problems, making their contributions vital to achieving safer, sustainable mobility for all.

We are so proud to share just some of the ways these inspiring women plan to use their new skills. Their passion is paving the way for a safer world:

• “What excites me most is the equity piece. In places where crash data is patchy or non-existent, communities often get overlooked. iRAP gives us a way to advocate for these forgotten roads and the people who use them.”
• “I plan to use the iRAP tools to embed data-driven road safety into infrastructure projects, especially in rapidly growing cities where poor design disproportionately affects women and vulnerable users.”
• “As a professor and researcher, I will incorporate them into university courses and road safety research, giving students access to internationally recognized methodologies.”
• “Learning the iRAP tools will allow me to align my research with globally recognized road safety assessment standards.”
