Automobile Club of Moldova (ACM) has secured a remarkable double victory, earning both the Vision Zero for Youth International Leadership Award and the prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award 2024. These awards recognise their work in achieving the commitment of national and local authorities to establish speed limits of 30km/h in areas where traffic intersects with vulnerable users, especially around schools.
A Pioneer in Road Safety
The Prince Michael International Road Safety Award, a global accolade celebrating excellence in road safety, honors the ACM’s ground breaking work in establishing 30km/h speed limits in areas with high pedestrian and cyclist traffic.
The ACM has been instrumental in improving road safety around schools in Moldova. With the support of the FIA Foundation and EASST, the ACM successfully lobbied for and implemented a policy change mandating a 30km/h speed limit in all school zones. To further enhance safety, the ACM has utilized the Star Rating for Schools App to assess and improve three schools in the northern region of Moldova. By identifying critical safety issues and implementing targeted interventions, the ACM has made significant strides in creating safer school environments.

A Vision Zero for Youth Champion
Moldova has been awarded the Vision Zero for Youth International Leadership Award by the National Center for Safe Routes to School in the USA with support from the FIA Foundation.
The award was presented to the Moldova Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Automobile Club of Moldova for advocacy and action to improve road safety with new low-speed legislation to protect the country’s most vulnerable road users. The International Vision Zero for Youth Leadership Award recognizes and highlights innovative road safety practices to inspire other decisionmakers to take steps towards reaching zero traffic deaths among children and youth.
This recognition underscores Moldova’s outstanding commitment to creating safer streets for its youngest and most vulnerable citizens. The collaboration between national and local leaders, civic groups, and advocates has not only transformed policies but has also inspired global efforts to prioritize youth safety. By adopting measures like the 30 km/h speed limits, Moldova is setting an example for the world to follow in advancing road safety and fostering healthier, more connected communities,” said Rita Cuypers, FIA Foundation Director of Partnerships.
