A35 Brebemi-Aleatica is the first motorway in Italy and one of the first in Europe to receive international iRAP Certification, a recognition that attests to the excellence of the road infrastructure in terms of safety.

The motorway connects the cities of Brescia, Bergamo, and Milan.

This prestigious certification testifies to A35 Brebemi’s constant commitment to ensuring maximum safety for users, a fundamental value for the company and for the growing number of motorists who choose this infrastructure to get around.

iRAP certification evaluates road infrastructure according to global safety standards, assigning a score from 1 to 5 stars. Each improvement in road rating – for example, from 1 to 2 stars – can reduce fatalities by up to 50 percent.

Infrastructure that achieves 3 stars or more, such as A35 Brebemi scoring 4 stars, is significantly safer and helps save lives.

“To be the first highway in Italy to obtain this certification is a source of great pride and responsibility,” said Matteo Milanesi, General Manager of A35 Brebemi.

”This important recognition certifies our commitment to ensure increasingly high safety standards, helping to save lives and prevent serious accidents. Safety is an indispensable value that guides our every choice and investment.”

Aleatica, of which A35 Brebemi is part, has obtained this certification for 8 concessions in 4 countries (Italy, Mexico, Chile and Spain), consolidating its pioneering role in promoting safe and sustainable infrastructure in Europe and Latin America.

David Diaz, Global CEO of Aleatica, commented, “Safety on our roads is our top priority as we strive to contribute to the reduction of fatalities and serious injuries, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Today we can proudly say that 8 of our concessions are certified with three stars or more, with A25 Brebemi as a 4-star flagship, making us the first company in the industry to achieve this certification for multiple assets in several countries. This motivates us to continue working to ensure that at least 75 percent of Aleatica’s infrastructure achieves three stars or higher by 2030.”

An independent study by Johns Hopkins University highlighted the positive impact of safer road upgrades informed by the iRAP methodology, with about 700,000 lives saved and serious injuries prevented by iRAP partners’ projects from 2016 to 2024.

Rob McInerney, CEO of iRAP, said, “Tragically, more than 3,200 people lose their lives on the roads every day. Road crashes are the leading cause of death among young people. We know that road infrastructure rated 3 stars or higher saves lives and prevents injuries, but unfortunately less than half of the roads rated globally meet this standard. Aleatica’s leadership and commitment to achieving this goal is to be commended.”

The A35 Brebemi iRAP Certification was presented on 28 November in Mexico City during the “Safer Roads for Latin America and the Caribbean event” (organized by iRAP, in collaboration with the Aleatica Foundation for Road Safety) which brought together 60 experts from 9 countries in the region

A35 Brebemi and Aleatica are recognised for excellence, not only for infrastructure efficiency and innovation, but also for their contribution to road safety and sustainability, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
