King Fahd Causeway, one of the world’s longest bridges over water connecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Kingdom of Bahrain, has achieved a 4-star iRAP Star Rating Certification for safety.

Built in the 1980’s and managed by King Fahd Causeway Authority, the Causeway is an impressive engineering feat that has brought numerous economic and social benefits to both kingdoms and the region in general.

The four-lane 25 km long causeway is a series of interconnected bridges connecting land and sea, with a 660,000 square metre artificial island in between.

Youssef AI Alabdan, CEO of the King Fahd Causeway Authority said, “We are delighted to obtain iRAP Certification, confirming the 4-star safety rating of the Causeway for vehicle occupants. The Causeway is used by thousands of passengers every hour, and ensuring their safety is imperative.”

King Fahd Causeway is the third busiest border crossing in the world in 2024, and experienced its highest number of travellers this year, with almost 180,000 travellers and about 63,000 vehicles crossing the border on the Causeway in one day.

iRAP congratulates the King Fahd Causeway Authority for their commitment to road safety and achievement of a 4-star rating.

iRAP Star Rating Certification is a voluntary process and can be performed for any road or design that has been assessed using the iRAP Star Rating methodology for vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, pedestrians and/or bicyclists.

It can help road owners and managers celebrate safer roads, while raising awareness about commitments to the Global Plan and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
