Safer roads and school journeys will be an essential focus of the Africa Road Safety Seminar from 8-9 October in Nairobi – don’t miss your place, register today!

iRAP is supporting the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) and the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), in association with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), to coordinate the two-day event.

The programme will shine a light on leading topics in the current road safety conversation for Africa, and give participants a deeper understanding of effective, evidence-based interventions which can be applied towards achieving the goals of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 in the region.

iRAP will host three interactive sessions:

  • Star Ratings for a Road Network, Tuesday 8 October, 13.00 – 15.00 hours
    This interactive session will see groups using the Star Rating Demonstrator to assess the safety of different road scenarios for vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, pedestrians and bicyclists, and devise improved road designs. Participants to bring own computers.
  • Implementing Safer Roads: Challenges and Opportunities, Wednesday 9 October, 10.30 – 12.00 hours
    This panel discussion will focus on real-world challenges and opportunities for implementing safe infrastructure in Africa, followed by break out groups to consider issues at national / state / local levels.
  • Walkshop: Star Ratings for Schools and Youth Engagement, Wednesday 9 October, 13.00 – 15.00 hours
    This interactive, hands-on session will take participants to the roadside to use the Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) App and the Youth Engagement App (YEA) to assess the safety of a journey to school Participants to bring own mobile phone.

The seminar will be valuable for a diverse body of stakeholders including:

  • Key government ministries and national lead agencies

  • Research institutions
  • Private sector organizations
  • Road safety focussed civil society organizations
