High-standard High-speed Roads

Descrição

The iRAP Star Rating is an effective tool for communicating the level of safety which is ‘built-in’ to the road for vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians. iRAP are focused on ensuring that the tools they provide are as robust as they can be and provide the right insights for road operators.

High-standard high-speed roads are controlled-access divided highways that have been designed for high-speed vehicular traffic, with all traffic flow—ingress and egress—regulated through grade separated intersections. The elimination of conflicts with other directions of traffic dramatically improves safety, while increasing traffic capacity and speed. The safety of high-standard high-speed roads can be further improved by the use of a range of ITS solutions (e.g. ramp metering, incident detection, weather monitoring, VMS / advance warning, lane keeping, hard-shoulder running, variable speed limits, managed motorways, and V2I solutions).

As more research is carried out, the performance of high-standard high-speed roads is being understood better. This iRAP Innovation Partnership will review the evidence base that underpins the performance of these roads, extend it where possible, and update the iRAP Star Rating model.

Status

An iRAP Innovation Partnership has been established to explore how the iRAP Star Ratings can be refined to reflect the management of risk on High-standard High-speed roads.
