Our latest programme metrics underscore the life-saving power of iRAP partnerships – helping prevent almost 860,000 deaths and injuries, delivering more than 4.2 million kilometres of road safety assessments across 140 countries influencing the safety of US$120 billion in infrastructure investment, and training nearly 93,000 people.

Each June and December, we compile a comprehensive global analysis of partner activity to measure impact and celebrate progress.

The latest figures, as at the end of 2025, are made possible thanks to the generous support of our major donor the FIA Foundation; programme supporters Aleatica Foundation and Prudence Foundation; and the outstanding commitment of our 38,000 partners worldwide.

Lives and injuries saved

  • Investigación realizada por la Universidad Johns Hopkins, publicado en la prestigiosa revista PLOS One, estimates that iRAP partners have prevented nearly 860,000 deaths and serious injuries using the iRAP methodology and tools to inform road safety infrastructure changes and safer speeds between 2016 and the end of 2025.

Assessments informing safer road upgrades

  • To date, 2 million km of roads and designs have been Clasificación por estrellas and 2.2 million km have been Crash Mapeo de riesgos in 140 countries.
  • The assessments are influencing US$120 billion of safer roads upgrades for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists and vehicle occupants.
  • In the last six months, Star Rating assessments have been conducted in 31 countries, including:
    • First iRAP assessments completed in Armenia, Chad, Guinea, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania and Oman.
    • Large assessments (>1,000km) completed in Australia (21,298km), Thailand (17,243km), the United Kingdom (12,278km), Saudi Arabia (9,249km), South Africa (4,017km), Mexico (3,832km), USA (3,219km), Uruguay (2,376km), Indonesia (2,280km), Brazil (1,825km) and Oman (1,489km).

  • Over 97,000km of Risk Mapping has been added in the last six months based on annual assessments undertaken in Australia, Spain and the United Kingdom, along with longer-term performance tracking assessments in Tunisia and New Zealand helping to inform advocacy and strategic investment planning.
  • Over 65,000km of Los diseños han sido calificados con estrellas. globally over all time, with designs analysis occurring for the first time this period in Burundi, New Zealand and Senegal. Larger Star Rating for Designs (SR4D) projects have been undertaken in Papua New Guinea (3,759km), Brazil (1,099km), Mozambique (363km), Senegal (162km), Australia (156km), Costa Rica (153km),  Mongolia (141km), Uruguay (67km) and New Zealand (51km). Two projects advanced during the year are helping to improve the safety of road design standards. The Proyecto de Diseño Seguro e Inclusivo en Asia Central (now complete) is helping to improve road design standards in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, with the release of a Safe Road Design Guidance and potential region-wide impact. In addition, the UN Road Safety Fund-supported Safe and Inclusive Design in Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal project is supporting safer road design in these three countries.   • El Route Review Tool is in use in 18 countries. It enables engineers to review an iRAP road safety assessment, Safer Roads Investment Plans, and predictions for fatal and serious injuries, and suggest infrastructure changes based on their own expertise and local knowledge. Using the iRAP model, User Defined Investment Plans can be generated, estimating the affect proposed changes will have on the Star Rating of the road and injury reductions.

Safer school journeys

  • Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) celebrated five years of inspirational partner impact in February during the 4th Global Ministerial Conference in Marrakech.
  • 2,475 schools have now been assessed by SR4S partners in 84 countries, positively impacting the safety of an estimated 515,305 students.
  • Schools were assessed for the first time in Burundi, Jordan, Palestine and Zimbabwe. Saudi Arabia leads the world with the highest number of schools assessed (321 schools), followed by Vietnam (278), Philippines (259), Uruguay (134) and India (133).
  • El Aplicación para la Participación Juvenil (YEA), developed as part of the Botnar Ai&Me project has been highly successful in capturing youth perceptions of risk, with pins marking where 4,495 children feel safe and unsafe on their journey to school supporting SR4S results. YEA pilot projects are now extending beyond Vietnam to Peru, South Africa and Chile.
  • El Empowering Youth for Liveable Cities (AI&Me2) project is focused on youth engagement. It includes scalability to new countries and technical enhancements to Star Rating for Schools and the YEA app. In addition, the Google AI for the Global Goals Project is further leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI), SR4S and AiRAP partnerships for big data analysis and road safety impact Vietnam-wide.

Safer cycling journeys

Building road safety capacity

  • 92,596 people have been trained in 176 countries since 2005 (adding 5,400 people trained in the last six months).
  • Courses have been delivered in 23 languages.
  • Programa de acreditación de iRAP is supporting 284 accredited practitioners and 17 systems in 51 countries, helping to ensure iRAP specification services are delivered to the same consistent global standard no matter where you are in the world. The last six months have seen the first accreditation of practitioners in Ghana, Peru and Sri Lanka.
  • Client feedback forms continue to rate iRAP Accredited Practitioners with excellence – 100% of client feedback forms received this year rate practitioners’ performance as excellent or very good.

Strategic projects

  • 63 Strategic Project partnerships were supported by the iRAP team in 2025 including 33 new projects.
  • 23 Star Rating Certifications have now been issued recognising 3-star or better safety in eight countries.
  • Some notable multi-national project collaborations include:

    • El COMBA Proyecto de Mantenimiento Conectado y Adaptativo para Carreteras Urbanas y Secundarias más Seguras en cinco países europeos para mejorar la supervisión de la seguridad en las redes de carreteras urbanas y rurales secundarias.
    • El Proyecto Senegal de Diez Pasos, funded by the United Nations Road Safety Fund (UNRSF) – a collaborative initiative of national and international partners led by iRAP to eliminate high-risk roads and build safer roads capacity in Senegal. 

Driving global innovation for safer roads

  • Transoft Solutions and The Floow joined Agilysis, Anditi and TomTom as Accredited AiRAP Proveedores de datos capaces de generar datos para atributos y regiones específicos de acuerdo con el Manual de Codificación iRAP.
  • Global partnerships in 2025 are supporting an update to iRAP’s Star Rating Model, due for release in May, aligned to international best practice and the latest research on crash risk factors particularly for vulnerable road users.
  • Don’t miss our upcoming 2026 iRAP Innovation Workshop coming up on 20 May in Budapest, part of Transport Research Arena (TRA2026).

Policy embedding for 3-star or better safety

Locally owned and led Road Assessment Programmes (RAPs)

  • NigeriaRAP launched in November, joining PakRAP, SnRAP and KazRAP launched earlier in 2025. There are now 18 National Road Assessment Programmes, driving local coordination and impact.
  • Just two of many RAP milestones this period include the release of a new AusRAP National Dashboard mapping Star Ratings and crash data for 71,000km of Australia’s major roads, and the December hosting of a KSARAP National Workshop sharing Saudi Arabia’s three-year programme progress.
  • As well as supporting our established ‘Programas 'x'RAP, se está apoyando el interés por nuevos PAR en Malawi, Kenia, Chile, Corea, Túnez, Etiopía, Eswatini, Jamaica, Colombia, Indonesia y Perú.
