Cambodia’s road safety journey continues to gain momentum, with the latest phase of the Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded iRAP project focusing on building long-term road safety capability within the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT). This follows the successful completion of a 900 km iRAP assessment of Cambodia’s strategic road network, which was completed in 2024.
Over recent months, three hands-on workshops have been delivered to 20 MPWT participants, providing practical training across the full iRAP assessment process. The programme has covered road surveys and data collection, road attribute coding, analysis and reporting using ViDA, interpretation of Star Ratings and Safer Roads Investment Plans, and field validation of recommended safety treatments.
Using assessment results from National Roads 1, 4, 6 and 41, participants have gained experience progressing from data collection and coding through to the identification and prioritisation of evidence-based road safety improvements. The training is helping build confidence in the use of iRAP tools while strengthening MPWT’s ability to integrate road safety into routine planning, design and investment decisions.
The capacity-building initiative represents an important next step in Cambodia’s growing road safety programme. Earlier this year, iRAP highlighted the significant progress already achieved in the country, including more than 1,600 km of roads and designs assessed through partner-led activities, as well as increasing engagement in road safety training and Safe School Zone initiatives.
With one workshop still to be delivered, the programme is moving closer to its key objective: establishing a dedicated MPWT team capable of independently managing and undertaking iRAP assessments and supporting the delivery of safer roads across Cambodia.
The project continues to demonstrate the value of combining infrastructure assessment with local capacity development to create sustainable, long-term road safety outcomes.
