Global Alliance Mobiliteit Snapshots Rapport: NGO's belichten gevaarlijke realiteiten op onze straten

In the lead up to the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety (Ministerial Conference) in Marrakech, Morocco, the Global Alliance of NGO’s published a new report: Mobility Snapshots: using local data to turn dangerous realities into safe, people-centered streets.

The report draws together 118 ‘Mobility Snapshots’ from 44 countries, each assessing an intersection by counting the number of pedestrians using it, and whether simple but life-saving interventions such as 30 km/h speed limits, pedestrian crossings and footpaths, and speed calming are present or lacking.

  • In total, 156,000 pedestrians used these 118 intersections during peak hour, yet key interventions to protect those who walk are lacking in many:
  • 102 lacked a speed limit of 30 km/h or lower;
  • 106 lacked usable pedestrian crossings on all legs of the intersection;
  • 67 lacked usable footpaths on all legs of the intersection;
  • 102 lacked traffic calming to reduce vehicle speeds around pedestrians.

The Alliance and its partners call on governments to listen to findings and solutions offered by NGOs based on their Mobility Snapshots. It also calls on civil societies and NGOs to keep using the Mobility Snapshot tools to bring attention to intersections that pose risks to vulnerable road users and to collect more concrete examples to build on the demands for people’s right to safe mobility.
