iRAP has proudly announced the winner and finalists for the 2024 iRAP Gary Liddle Memorial Trophy in Marrakech today, presented to the world’s best performing road authority eliminating high-risk roads.
Aux fins de la présentation Dix Étapes vers 2030 pour un événement parallèle sur la sécurité des infrastructures routières of the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, the perpetual iRAP Trophy honours the lifelong public-sector and transport contribution of the charity’s former Board Chairman Gary Liddle AO qui est décédé en 2023.
The winners were selected from 12 highly competitive nominations from 11 countries.
Agence Nationale des Routes de Tanzanie (TANROADS) took out the prestigious gong as this year’s Winner. Tanzania was the first country in the world to apply the innovative Plan en dix étapes pour une infrastructure routière plus sûre with TANROADS successfully achieving reductions in road trauma associated with their elimination of high-risk journeys for all road users across the country. TANROADS’ Ten Step Plan Initiative has also built sustainable institutional capacity, impact, and partnerships that continue to identify and eliminate high-risk roads across Tanzania, where it is estimated road crashes claim more than 16,000 people each year.
The recipients of the 2024 Gary Liddle Memorial Trophy are:
- Winner – TANROADS for ‘Ten Step Plan Tanzania’
- Shining Star – Roads General Authority for ‘Safer Roads in Saudi Arabia’
- Shining Star – Himachal Pradesh Roads Infrastructure Development Corporation (HPRIDCL) for ‘Safer Roads in Himachal Pradesh, India’
- Rising Star – Municipality of Lima, Peru for ‘Enhancing School Zone Safety through the Colecaminos Program’
- Rising Star – Main Roads Western Australia for the ‘Tonkin Highway Extension’
iRAP Global Program Director and Acting CEO Greg Smith said, “It is a privilege to honour Gary Liddle’s legacy today and celebrate the lifesaving work of road authorities worldwide in making roads safer and communities more liveable through the innovative application of the iRAP methodology and tools.
“The calibre of nominations this year was very high, with TANROADS a standout for its widescale application of the iRAP approach, large scale of mobilised investment focused on all road users, and rapid scaling of partnerships and capacity to save lives. TANROADS’ program demonstrates the innovative world-first implementation of the multi-partner collaborative Ten Step Plan for Safer Road Infrastructure approach. Its effectiveness and transferability is evident today in TANROADS’ achievement and demand for the approach from other countries in the region.”
iRAP Méthodologie de notation par étoiles provides a simple and objective measure of the level of safety that is ‘built-in’ to the road for vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
Impressed with the high calibre of nominations, the judging panel opted to also award Shining Star Trophies to the Himachal Pradesh Roads Infrastructure Development Corporation India and Roads General Authority of Saudi Arabia, and Rising Star Trophies to the Municipality of Lima and Main Roads Western Australia, each showing impressive road safety leadership in different ways.
