DNIT Brazil awarded a Finalist for coveted international Gary Liddle Memorial Award

Le International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) has proudly announced Brazil’s National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) as a Finalist for the iRAP Gary Liddle Memorial Trophy presented to the world’s best performing road authority eliminating high-risk roads. The Trophy Winner will be announced this Thursday at the World Roads Congress in Prague in a prestigious ceremony at 3.30pm local time.

The new and perpetual iRAP trophy honours the lifelong public-sector and transport contribution of the charity’s former Board Chairman Gary Liddle AO who passed away earlier this year.

In just 20 months, DNIT supported by local partners and iRAP, Star Rated the country’s extensive 57,000km network, providing essential data to identify high-risk road segments and develop Safer Roads Investment Plans for each State that prioritised cost-effective engineering countermeasures to improve road safety.

In announcing the finalists, iRAP CEO Rob McInerney said, “The calibre of nominations was very high, with DNIT a standout for its policy commitment, scale of assessments and mobilised public and private-sector investment to save lives and prevent serious injuries. Its innovation in reporting and integration with agency activities is world-leading,” he said.

DNIT Director Luiz Guilherme de Mello said, “We are very proud to receive this international recognition. DNIT launched the BrazilRAP project in 2021 making a strategic decision to place the iRAP Methodology at the heart of our work to improve road safety. It has provided the evidence-base and inspiration for collaborative efforts to scale up capacity, investment and transform safety across our network.”

iRAP’s Star Rating Methodology provides a simple and objective measure of the level of safety that is ‘built-in’ to the road for vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

Through innovative data analysis that shares iRAP Star Rating results alongside crash data, DNIT departments in road planning, engineering, budget and management, as well as all federal and state road safety partners, can openly visualize the potential of work planned and results achieved. This is contributing to synergy in decision making and a strategic approach to road safety improvement.

Going beyond isolated improvements, the project has effectively tapped into existing funding to activate immediate life-saving road upgrades and inspired long-term partnerships with public and private investors.

The iRAP Gary Liddle Memorial Trophy winner will be presented on Thursday 5 October during the Atelier d'innovation iRAP, un événement parallèle officiel de XXVIIth World Road Congress being held from 2-6 October at Prague Congress Centre, Czech Republic.

À propos de Gary Liddle et du trophée commémoratif

Gary Liddle était une figure emblématique et respectée du secteur des transports. Il a été administrateur bénévole de l'association caritative iRAP pendant neuf ans et président de son conseil d'administration de 2017 à 2022. Avant son décès des suites de la SLA en 2023, son leadership et sa sagesse ont permis d'accroître considérablement l'impact de l'association, dont plus de 400 000 décès et blessures ont été évités grâce à ses partenaires à travers le monde. Gary a œuvré pour le secteur des transports pendant plus de 40 ans. Durant cette période, outre son soutien à iRAP, il a occupé des postes de direction importants dans le secteur routier australien et international, notamment celui de directeur général de VicRoads, de secrétaire adjoint du ministère des Transports, de la Planification et des Infrastructures locales (État de Victoria), de président de l'ARRB, d'Austroads et d'iMOVE, de membre du conseil d'administration de Roads Australia et a exercé des fonctions de gouvernance au sein de PIARC et de REAAA. En 2017, Gary a été nommé Officier de l'Ordre d'Australie (AO) pour “ services exceptionnels rendus à l'administration publique dans le secteur des transports de l'État de Victoria, grâce à son leadership en matière d'orientation politique, de développement des infrastructures, de sécurité routière et de réforme réglementaire ”. Leader charismatique et déterminé, mentor généreux et attentif, il était aussi un fervent défenseur de la sécurité routière. Compte tenu de son engagement de toute une vie envers le secteur public et les transports, le programme iRAP honore la mémoire de Gary en décernant le Trophée commémoratif Gary Liddle, remis depuis 2023. Les candidatures sont ouvertes à toute autorité routière nationale, étatique ou locale du monde entier ayant utilisé la méthodologie et/ou les outils iRAP pour améliorer la sécurité de ses routes et la qualité de vie de ses communautés. Les programmes et activités relatifs à la sécurité des infrastructures, ainsi que les évaluations associées, doivent avoir été menés à bien au cours des cinq dernières années. Ce prix récompense l'impact vital, le leadership en matière de gouvernance et de service public, la pertinence, l'innovation, la durabilité, la collaboration et la transférabilité à d'autres juridictions. Douze candidatures ont été reçues d'autorités routières de onze pays pour l'édition 2024.
