A Programa Internacional de Avaliação Rodoviária (iRAP) has proudly announced Brazil’s Departamento Nacional de Infraestrutura de Transportes (DNIT) as a Finalist for the Troféu Memorial Gary Liddle da iRAP presented to the world’s best performing road authority eliminating high-risk roads. The Trophy Winner will be announced this Thursday at the World Roads Congress in Prague in a prestigious ceremony at 3.30pm local time.
The new and perpetual iRAP trophy honours the lifelong public-sector and transport contribution of the charity’s former Board Chairman Gary Liddle AO who passed away earlier this year.
In just 20 months, DNIT supported by local partners and iRAP, Star Rated the country’s extensive 57,000km network, providing essential data to identify high-risk road segments and develop Safer Roads Investment Plans for each State that prioritised cost-effective engineering countermeasures to improve road safety.
In announcing the finalists, iRAP CEO Rob McInerney said, “The calibre of nominations was very high, with DNIT a standout for its policy commitment, scale of assessments and mobilised public and private-sector investment to save lives and prevent serious injuries. Its innovation in reporting and integration with agency activities is world-leading,” he said.
DNIT Director Luiz Guilherme de Mello said, “We are very proud to receive this international recognition. DNIT launched the BrazilRAP project in 2021 making a strategic decision to place the iRAP Methodology at the heart of our work to improve road safety. It has provided the evidence-base and inspiration for collaborative efforts to scale up capacity, investment and transform safety across our network.”

Through innovative data analysis that shares iRAP Star Rating results alongside crash data, DNIT departments in road planning, engineering, budget and management, as well as all federal and state road safety partners, can openly visualize the potential of work planned and results achieved. This is contributing to synergy in decision making and a strategic approach to road safety improvement.
Going beyond isolated improvements, the project has effectively tapped into existing funding to activate immediate life-saving road upgrades and inspired long-term partnerships with public and private investors.
The iRAP Gary Liddle Memorial Trophy winner will be presented on Thursday 5 October during the iRAP Innovation Workshop, an official side event of the XXVII Congresso Mundial de Estradas realizado de 2 a 6 de outubro no Prague Congress Centre, República Tcheca.

Sobre Gary Liddle e o Troféu Memorial
Gary Liddle foi um líder profundamente respeitado na indústria de transportes, um membro voluntário do conselho da caridade iRAP por nove anos e Presidente do Conselho do iRAP de 2017 a 2022. Antes de seu falecimento com Esclerose Lateral Amiotrófica (ELA) em 2023, sua liderança e sabedoria ajudaram a aumentar o impacto da organização a ponto de mais de 400.000 mortes e ferimentos terem sido evitados por parceiros em todo o mundo. Gary dedicou mais de 40 anos à indústria de transportes. Nesse período, além de apoiar o iRAP, ele ocupou cargos de liderança sênior no setor rodoviário australiano, incluindo Diretor Executivo da VicRoads, Vice-Secretário do Departamento de Transportes, Planejamento e Infraestrutura Local (Vic), Presidente da ARRB, Presidente da Austroads e Presidente do iMOVE, membro do Conselho da Roads Australia e cargos de governança na PIARC e na REAAA. Em 2017, Gary foi condecorado com a Ordem da Austrália (AO) por “serviços distintos à administração pública no setor de transportes vitoriano por meio de liderança na direção de políticas, desenvolvimento de infraestrutura, segurança rodoviária e reforma regulatória”. Ele foi um líder forte e firme, um mentor generoso e solidário e um defensor comprometido da segurança rodoviária. Dada a sua contribuição ao longo da vida para o setor público e de transportes, o iRAP está homenageando o legado de Gary com o Troféu Memorial Gary Liddle, que será concedido anualmente. As indicações estão abertas a qualquer autoridade rodoviária nacional, estadual ou local do mundo que tenha utilizado a metodologia e/ou ferramentas do iRAP para tornar suas estradas mais seguras e as comunidades mais habitáveis.
