To kickstart the coming Décennie des Nations Unies pour les transports durables (2026–2035), a global call is out for Sustainable Transport Action Commitments by Member States and stakeholders which aim to deliver concrete progress in the Decade. We call on our partners to submit their commitments by 14 November including road infrastructure safety as a priority!
Why is your safety commitment important?
Un système de transport véritablement durable protège tous ses usagers. Pour y parvenir, il est essentiel de veiller à ce que les rues, les routes et les autoroutes obtiennent au moins 3 étoiles (sur un total de 5) et soient fondamentalement sûres pour tous les modes de transport, toutes les capacités et tous les trajets.
La sécurité routière fait partie des ODD (voir 3.6 et 11.2) et constitue un élément clé pour la réalisation d'un large éventail de priorités, notamment la croissance économique, les infrastructures résilientes, le commerce, les chaînes d'approvisionnement mondiales, la promotion de la santé, l'action climatique, la réduction de la pauvreté et l'accès à l'éducation.
En alignant la Décennie des transports durables (2026-2035) avec Plan mondial pour la Décennie d’action pour la sécurité routière (2021-2030) et le Approche de système sûr, Il existe là une opportunité de créer une continuité dans l'action et de donner un nouvel élan aux infrastructures routières sûres, en intégrant la sécurité dans tous les aspects de la planification des transports.
Objectifs mondiaux de performance en matière de sécurité routière 3 et 4 encourager les gouvernements à améliorer la note des routes et de leurs aménagements à 3 étoiles ou plus pour tous les usagers. Pour chaque amélioration d'une note (en étoiles) d'une route ou de son aménagement, les coûts des accidents sont à peu près divisés par deux. Projets d'investissement ayant utilisé la méthodologie et les ressources iRAP, disponibles gratuitement. ont déjà permis d'éviter des centaines de milliers de morts et de blessures graves..
Des environnements routiers sûrs favorisent également le choix ; lorsque les gens se sentent en sécurité dans un environnement, ils sont plus susceptibles de se sentir à l'aise pour marcher, faire du vélo et utiliser les systèmes de transport public qui seront nécessaires pour répondre en toute sécurité à la demande croissante de mobilité urbaine.
What to commit to?
L’adoption d’objectifs de notation par étoiles et l’intégration précoce de principes et d’interventions de sécurité fondés sur des données probantes dans la planification des rues, des routes, des autoroutes, des systèmes de transport public et de tout aménagement ayant une incidence sur la circulation des personnes ou des véhicules sur les routes constituent un moyen fiable pour les gouvernements de minimiser les coûts de mise en œuvre tout en maximisant les avantages en matière de sécurité.
Committing to the achievement of Global Road Safety Performance Targets 3 and 4 will ensure safety is embedded in road designs and infrastructure upgrades.
iRAP, the International Road Federation (IRF) and the FIA Foundation’s Campagne # SaferRoadsPledge calls on organisations involved in designing and financing roads to pledge their commitment to safer roads and mobility in support of sustainable transport and the SDGs.

How will commitments be used?
Commitments will be highlighted throughout the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport at different United Nations events, starting with the 10 December 2025 launch of the Implementation Plan of the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport. To enhance transparency and accountability, all initiatives will be registered on a dedicated digital space, hosted on the UN Decade website, which allows the public to access information. The action commitments will become a prominent part of the implementation and follow-up of the UN Decade. Implementing entities will be invited to share updates on progress later during the UN Decade.
Stakeholder Briefing
A virtual briefing webinar, organized by UN DESA, will be held on 16 October 2025, from 9:30AM – 10:30AM (EDT/New York Time). It aims to provide an opportunity to share updated information with stakeholders about the 10 December launch event, the call for Sustainable Transport Action Commitments and the development of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport Implementation Plan. The Draft Implementation Plan – Call for Stakeholder Final Comments and Reflections
DESA has prepared the draft Implementation Plan for the Decade of Sustainable Transport, an action-oriented global policy document, in collaboration with the United Nations Regional Commissions. As requested by the General Assembly, DESA has actively consulted Member States, specialized agencies, funds, programmes and bodies of the United Nations, as well as other intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations and relevant stakeholders to seek inputs to the Implementation Plan. This includes the online stakeholder consultation that resulted in valuable inputs from 113 organizations across 45 countries.
Stakeholders are now invited to provide final comments and reflections on the draft Implementation Plan using this dedicated online form by 31 October 2025.
The Decade Launch
The launch of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport will consist of an opening, a high-level segment, showcase of voluntary commitments, and an interactive multi-stakeholder roundtable. The meeting will be open to Member States and Observers, the United Nations system, ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations and other relevant stakeholders through a dedicated registration process.
