30th Anniversary of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims: Remember, Support, Act – 19 November 2023

Le Journée mondiale du souvenir des victimes de la route is commemorated on the third Sunday of November each year. It is a global event to remember the many millions who have been killed and seriously injured on the world’s roads, and to acknowledge the suffering of all affected victims, families and communities.

The theme of WDoR 2023 is “Remember. Support. Act.” This theme emphasizes the importance of remembering those who have been lost, supporting those who have been affected, and taking action to prevent future road deaths and injuries.

REMEMBER: We remember the millions of people who have lost their lives or been seriously injured in road crashes. We remember their loved ones, and the pain and grief that they are experiencing. We also remember the emergency services personnel and other first responders who work tirelessly to help those affected by road crashes.

ACT: We take action to prevent future road deaths and injuries. We work with governments, businesses, and civil society organizations to promote road safety policies and practices.

With the donor support of the Fondation FIA, iRAP works with partners worldwide to make sure new roads are safe and high-risk existing roads are financed and improved on a scale that matters. Together, we will ensure safe journeys for all road users aligned with important global agendas focussed on road safety, child health, climate, transport, gender and urban mobility.

iRAP produces a wide range of resources to help road safety practitioners and advocates. These resources can be used to support WDoR activities in a number of ways.

For example, the Boîte à outils pour la sécurité routière provides a one-stop resource for information on the causes and prevention of road crashes. The toolkit includes fact sheets, case studies, and practical guidance on how to implement road safety programs and interventions.

The recently released Explorateur d'informations sur la sécurité de l'iRAP, qui met en lumière l'ampleur réelle des accidents de la route, la sécurité des routes du monde et l'impact positif que peut avoir un investissement.

With the iRAP Safety Insights Explorer you can explore:

  • Estimates of the numbers and types of injuries that occur for every country by age and sex.
  • Star Ratings and key design attributes for more than 502,000km of roads in 84 countries.
  • The business case for investing in safer roads, including the life-saving impact of ensuring that most travel occurs on roads rated 3-stars or better for everyone for every country.

Additional resources available to help:

  • Resources for 5-star RAPs – An online package of new Ressources pour les RAP 5 étoiles, funded by FedEx, has launched to support road assessment programmes around the world eliminate high-risk roads and save lives.
  • RAP Tools menu – iRAP and its partners have developed a suite of tools that use the méthodologie iRAP to support infrastructure safety management globally and locally.
  • Overview Summary of Countries’ Progress – this summary shares national safer roads activity for 160 countries and the human and economic benefit of achieving UN Targets 3 and 4 by 2030. A supporting web-based table can be filtered to a country, key word or multiple countries based on income level or global region.
  • iRAP Star Ratings of NACTO-GDCI’s Global Street Design Guide resource is free and here to help you design safe streets in your community, to help save lives and improve sustainable mobility for all road users. This resource helps promote the safety, health, economic, and environmental benefits of lower speeds around the world.
