This European Mobility Week, the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) is celebrating European partners helping to create safer, more inclusive and sustainable mobility across 42 countries for all generations.
With this year’s theme “Mobility for Everyone”, and a specific focus on intergenerational fairness, the message is clear: the streets, roads and highways we design today shape the opportunities, safety and quality of life of people tomorrow. Making roads safe is fundamental to that legacy.
Across Europe, iRAP partners have Star Rated more than 236,000 kilometres of roads, including around 253 schools, and Risk Mapped a further 1.8 million kilometres. Informed by CycleRAP, the safety of on- and off-road cycling paths in more than 20 countries has been assessed.
Together this work is identifying high-risk locations, and improving the safety of road designs, policies, and US$27.3 billion of infrastructure investment in road maintenance and upgrades. More than 18,000 people have been trained.
Innovation for the mobility of tomorrow
European Commission-funded projects including PHOEBE, ELABORATOR, CAMBER y MARFIL are advancing new approaches to safer, cleaner and more inclusive mobility.
New technologies and methods are making it possible to understand road risk at greater scale. AiRAP is using AI and other data sources to support network-wide road safety assessment and risk analysis, helping decision-makers make better use of road assets and direct limited resources where they can have the greatest impact.
These innovations are particularly important for vulnerable road users. Shared safety approaches and real-world testing in European Living Labs is helping to ensure mobility systems work for people of all ages and abilities, while advancing safer journeys and climate neutral cities.
A safer legacy for generations
Innovation and collaboration will be essential in the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport 2026–2035, with its ambition for safe, inclusive, green and efficient transportation systems. At the same time, momentum must continue through the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030, which aims to halve global road deaths and injuries by 2030.
In Europe, these ambitions are reinforced by the EU road safety policy framework and its Vision Zero ambition to eliminate road deaths and serious injuries by 2050, with an interim target of a 50 per cent reduction by 2030.
De acuerdo a Explorador de información sobre seguridad de iRAP, achieving UN Target 4 for greater than 75 per cent of travel to be on 3-star or better roads for all road users in Europe by 2030 stands to save over 18,000 lives each year and 32.2 million deaths and injuries over the 20-year life of road treatments, with an annual economic benefit of EUR 100.8 billion (US$116.3 billion).

By bringing data together in clear, practical formats, strengthening local capacity and applying innovative tools, partners are prioritising the design and build of road networks that are safer, more inclusive, and sustainable for all generations regardless of their age, income, location, gender or abilities.
