Road safety leaders from around the world are preparing for a significant shift in how infrastructure risk is measured, prioritised and communicated with the upcoming launch of iRAP Star Rating Model Version 3.10 in May 2026.
Following five highly attended #RAPKnowledgeLive global webinars in March and April, iRAP has now made recordings available in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, ensuring partners and practitioners across regions can engage with the changes in their preferred language.

What This Means for Existing and Future Projects
To ensure consistency, projects already underway using Version 3.02 in ViDA will remain unchanged. However, Version 3.10 will become the default model for all new assessments from May 2026.

ViDA users will be notified by email about the launch of version 3.10 in ViDA.

A Major Step Forward for Global Road Safety
Developed after a comprehensive five‑year evidence review led by the iRAP Global Technical Committee, Version 3.10 represents the most substantial update to the Star Rating methodology since version 3.02. The new model incorporates the latest global crash‑risk research and aligns more closely with Principes de systèmes sûrs et le Décennie d'action pour la sécurité routière.

- Safe System Alignment: Aligns risk factors and injury relationships with Safe System principles.
- Vulnerable Road User (VRU) Focus: Enhances the accuracy of risk assessments, particularly for pedestrians and bicyclists, and to a lesser extent, motorcyclists.
- Robust Outcomes: Ensures assessments remain robust, repeatable and aligned with real-world injury outcomes.
What’s New in Star Rating Model Version 3.10?

Key Methodology Enhancements
- Major VRU Updates: Significant changes to pedestrian and bicyclist models, including a new “Bicyclist Crossing” crash type.
- Granular Risk Factors: Implementation of 1 km/h speed increments and 1,000 vehicle-per-lane increments for external traffic flow.
- Unified Banding: A consistent Star Rating banding system across pedestrian and bicyclist models to ensure uniform interpretation.
- Zero Star Rating: A new ‘Zero Star’ band to help differentiate sections of road with extremely high risk and prioritise them for treatment.
- Decimal Star Ratings: A more sensitive and nuanced understanding of road safety that goes beyond traditional whole-Star thresholds.
- Operating Speed Functionality: New ViDA features allow users to produce Star Ratings based on operating speeds alone.
