Djibouti: A First in Cooperation Between iRAP, EcoHumanis, and the Djibouti Roads Agency (ADR) on National Route 2

En juin 2026, iRAP, EcoHumanis et l’Agence Djiboutienne des Routes ont engagé leur première coopération sur la Route Nationale 2 entre Nagad et Loyada, associant évaluations de sécurité routière et actions de sensibilisation communautaire afin de contribuer à des déplacements plus sûrs et à sauver des vies à Djibouti.

Djibouti, situé dans la Corne de l'Afrique, joue un rôle essentiel en tant que plaque tournante commerciale qui relie l'Afrique de l'Est, le Moyen-Orient et l'Asie. Le gouvernement s'est fixé des objectifs stratégiques dans le secteur routier, notamment le développement des corridors internationaux et des routes cruciales pour stimuler la croissance des régions défavorisées.

The Djibouti office of EcoHumanis and ADR officially launched the HIV, violence against women, and road safety awareness campaign in April 2026. This marks a first in the cooperation between the iRAP team and EcoHumanis in Djibouti. During the iRAP team’s visit in June 2026, stakeholders were able to discuss the project’s objectives and begin the analysis activities. This phase will be followed by the iRAP study and the rollout of the awareness campaign.

The joint work program on National Route 2 (RN2) includes:

• Defining a road safety communication campaign
• Raising awareness about road safety among local residents, drivers, students, and truck drivers
• An introductory session on iRAP (Integrated Road Safety Assessment)
• Pilot road safety assessments using iRAP protocols on the existing road
• A pilot assessment of a school

The two weeks from June 13 to 27 were dedicated to meetings with stakeholders and data collection using iRAP protocols to establish a baseline. Nathalie Chiavassa and Lowan Bonou, the road safety experts, were on site with the EcoHumanis team, Idyle Abdourahman and François Dolambi. The entire team expressed their delight at this initial collaboration and the initiative to improve road safety in Djibouti.

In May 2025, during Jean Todd’s visit to Djibouti, Prime Minister His Excellency Mr. Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening road safety and saving lives in Djibouti (Réduire les accidents, sauver des vies : une priorité partagée par Djibouti et l’ONU – Primature). This first joint action between EcoHumanis, iRAP, and ADR embodies this commitment to saving lives.
