iRAP’s latest metrics have been released showing work across 101 countries with European risk-mapping growth, 770 school assessments in 38 countries, great training activity and an additional USD$11.3 billion in safer roads investment in the last 12 months.
Each year, iRAP reports to our major donor the FIA Foundation on the work of the charity and our partners saving lives on safer roads across the globe. We applaud the amazing work of our RAP partners – governments, mobility clubs, development banks, NGOs and stakeholders – whose work is eliminating high risk roads every day in local communities supported by iRAP’s tools, training and programmes.
Highlights of this reporting period:
- Over 1.1 million kms of Star Rating assessments have been completed over time. Major countries performing Star Ratings in the last 6 months have included Australia, Portugal, Brazil, Spain, USA, Pakistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, India and Indonesia.
- Nearly 1.5 million kms of Crash Risk Mapping has been completed over time, with recent mapping in Spain, Italy, Croatia, Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Portugal. In Europe, the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) GEDOOD Project for the European Commission in four countries has boosted this number. SLAIN and the RADAR project across 12 countries in the Danube region are creating enhanced scale and partner support in Eastern and Western Europe.
- 25,640 people have been trained, an additional 6,200 in the last year. Significant growth has been seen in training delivered on-line. For training delivered in-country, Brazil, India and St Lucia have significantly grown their local capacity.
- 770 schools have been assessed in 38 countries using the Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) app, with Ghana and Peru the newest countries applying the tool. - 51 countries have mobilised safer roads investment informed by RAP assessments to the tune of $46,900 million in high income and $32,769 million in low and middle income countries.

Saudi Arabia has been added in this reporting period to UK, Malaysia, New Zealand, Sweden, China, Netherlands, Australia and Chile) and five institutions (the United Nations, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, UNESCAP and the Millennium Challenge Corporation). - Over 48,000kms of light star ratings have been completed (mostly in Thailand) and over 8,400kms of Star Rating Designs.
- ViDA has processed over 25.8 million kms of data, with a jump in ViDA users to 8,824 – an additional 1,879 new users to the system in the last 12 months.
- Vaccins voor de wegen, highlighting the burden of injury, how safe the world and countries’ roads are, the road attributes that matter and the economic and human impact of achieving Target 4 by 2030 is proving a valuable resource supporting countries to understand their national situation.
iRAP provides the global standard for infrastructure safety. Our metrics have been adopted and used by the World Health Organisation, United Nations Member States, development banks, Sum4All, Road Safety Observatories, national and state governments worldwide, mobility clubs and the private sector.
