iRAP Partners to Advance Road Safety Around Iconic Interlagos Circuit in São Paulo

The International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) today joined the City of São Paulo, FIA FoundationCompanhia de Engenharia de Tráfego (CET), the Traffic State Council of São Paulo (CETRAN-SP), and the Brazilian Automobile Association (AAB) to sign a landmark Memorandum of Understanding aimed at improving road safety around the iconic Interlagos motorsport racing circuit.

The influential road safety initiative – leveraging the power of F1 with world class road safety expertise – will focus on enhancing safety for the hundreds of thousands of visitors to the track each year by assessing surrounding public roads and pedestrian infrastructure using the globally recognised iRAP methodology.

The initiative will also provide technical capacity support, deliver targeted recommendations ahead of the Formula 1 Grand Prix, and support the implementation of critical safety measures.

This innovative project seeks to strengthen road safety outcomes in São Paulo while setting a global benchmark for safe mobility at major sporting and event venues worldwide.

By integrating world-class safety assessments with practical improvements, the initiative aims to protect drivers, spectators, and local communities alike.

The project is expected to position Interlagos as a leading example of how cities can successfully combine major events with safer, more sustainable transport systems.

iRAP’s Strategic Projects Director Julio Urzua joined the signing event with Avi Silverman, Acting Executive Director of the FIA Foundation; Mayor Ricardo Nunes’ team led by Edson Aparecido, Municipal Secretary of the Government of Sao Paulo; Frederico Pierroti Arantes, President of CETRAN-SP; and AAB’s Vice President, Katia Flose Klein Reimberg, and Consultant Pedro Uther Dantas Trajano.

“Today’s signing marks an important step toward a lasting safety legacy for São Paulo. By applying the iRAP methodology around the Interlagos circuit, we are not only preparing for a safer Formula 1 Grand Prix, but creating safer, more inclusive journeys for the community every day. This partnership demonstrates how major events can catalyse long-term improvements, ensuring the benefits of investment in road safety extend well beyond race weekend,” Julio Urzua said.
