The very first global 5-Star Journeys Coalition of the Keen workshop was held in Brisbane last week, bringing together transport, technology, mobility and city leaders to explore a shared vision for 5-Star safe, inclusive, accessible and sustainable journeys by 2050 as a legacy of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. A future with ultimately no road deaths and injuries, no emissions and no trips not taken.
The partnership in South East Queensland is led by the Council of Mayors (SEQ), Committee for Brisbane and iRAP and includes over 60 global, national and local organisations including Transurban who hosted the event. The workshop was run by students from the University of Queensland Liveris Academy for Innovation and Leadership whose perspectives, expertise and energy helped challenge conventional thinking and inspire fresh approaches to long-standing transport and mobility challenges.
Discussions explored a range of critical questions, including what a successful 5-Star journey looks like for people of all ages and abilities and for freight of all sizes and types. Workshop participants shared where leading examples can be found, emerging trends likely to shape future mobility, the governance structures needed to support the partnership, and the unique contributions that different organisations can bring to the journey.
The Brisbane 2032 Games will provide the spark, but the ambition for all the partners extends far beyond the event itself. With an extra 2 million people moving to South East Queensland by 2046, the legacy must transform how people and freight move across the Region. The workshop challenged participants to move beyond traditional silos of responsibility, investment and action, taking a holistic, door-to-door view of journeys for both people and freight.
iRAP was represented by the Chief of Future Impact Rob McInerney AO and Global Programmes Manager Judy Williams. The vision for personalised need-specific navigation that guides people to the safest and most sustainable route and mode choice was shared. A future where ultimately every journey has a rating, and where that rating informs equity of choice and helps drive optimised private and public-sector investment in making travel better, more comfortable and more enjoyable for all.
The partnership forms part of a global effort to deliver 5-Star Journeys for all as a legacy of major sporting events around the world. From the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics and the FIFA World Cup in Mexico, to Formula One in Brasil, the Youth Olympics in Senegal and Brisbane 2032, the partners are focussed on ensuring that getting there and home again is part of the legacy.
