Star Rating of Designs for the improvements to the Nekempte–Bure Road in Ethiopia, west of Addis Ababa are underway. The safety project is funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies and being undertaken by the Global Road Safety Facility with local road authorities.
iRAP Accredited Supplier, FRED Ingénierie has been engaged to perform the Notes d'étoiles pour les créations and identify practical measures to improve safety for all road users.
The project is part of the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety aiming to reduce road deaths and injuries in 15 countries including Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Tanzania, Uganda and Vietnam.
The main objective of the project is the preparation of technical road safety studies on approximately 170 km west of Addis Ababa and their dissemination to inform the team on safety engineering measures that could save lives on selected roads in the country. This assistance is delivered through a series of technical activities comprising of iRAP baseline and Star Rating for Designs (SR4D) assessments, together with dissemination activities to ensure that project roads include road safety best practices.

According to iRAP’s Vaccins pour routes Big Data Tool, over 27,000 people die on Ethiopia’s roads each year (WHO, 2015) and achieving UN Target 3 for >75% of travel on 3-star or better roads for all road users by 2030 stands to save an estimated 12,000 lives every year.
