iRAP Highlights Evidence-Based Road Safety Solutions at ICTA2026 Namibia

Representing iRAP at ICTA2026 Namibia, Nathalie Chiavassa presented evidence-based road infrastructure solutions to improve and sustain safer roads for all users in Africa.

The 11th International Conference on Sustainable Transportation in Africa (ICTA2026- ICTA Transport Professionals), held in Windhoek, Namibia from 7–9 July 2026, brought together transport professionals, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders from across Africa and beyond under the theme “Sustainable, Safe and Smart Transport, Logistics and Tourism for Economic Growth.” The conference provided an important platform for sharing innovative approaches to creating safer, more sustainable, and resilient transport systems across the continent.

The Conference received the high patronage of key Namibian authorities such as the Road Fund Administration (RFA), The Ministry of Works and Transport of Namibia, The Roads Authority (RA), The Mayor of Windhoek , the Engineering Professions Association of Namibia (EPA) and high participation from the Southern African federation of Engineering Organizations (SAFEO), The International Road Federation (IRF-Geneva).

Representing iRAP, Nathalie Chiavassa, Safer Journeys Lead for Africa, contributed to the conference by presenting on “Safer Roads by Infrastructure Design and Operation: Evidence-based Interventions to Improve and Sustain Safer Roads for all Users in Africa.” The presentation highlighted the critical role of safer road infrastructure in reducing deaths and serious injuries, while supporting economic development and sustainable mobility across African countries.

The conference agenda reflected a growing recognition that sustainable transport is inseparable from broader socioeconomic objectives such as climate resilience, safety, smart mobility, regional integration, and economic growth.

The conference also highlighted the increasing importance of integrating safety with sustainability goals. Presentations on climate-resilient roads, green transport corridors, sustainable infrastructure planning, and smart mobility demonstrated how transport investments can simultaneously support economic growth, environmental stewardship, and safer travel. This integrated approach mirrors iRAP’s commitment to helping countries develop transport systems that are both safe and sustainable.

A key message emerging from ICTA2026 was that achieving Africa’s transport ambitions requires stronger collaboration between governments, academia, development partners, and the private sector. The conference opening included an overview of international partnerships supporting the global road safety agenda, while numerous technical sessions showcased the value of knowledge sharing and capacity building across countries and institutions.

For iRAP, participation in ICTA2026 provided an opportunity to engage with transport leaders from across the continent, share proven methodologies for safer infrastructure, and strengthen partnerships that can accelerate progress towards safer roads in Africa. Through evidence-based assessments, targeted infrastructure improvements, and collaboration with national and regional stakeholders, iRAP continues to support the delivery of safer journeys for road users while contributing to the broader objectives of sustainable development and economic prosperity.

As Africa continues to invest in transport networks that connect communities, facilitate trade, and support economic growth, conferences such as ICTA serve as an important reminder that cooperation must remain at the heart of transport planning and investment decisions. Through innovation, collaboration, and evidence-based action, safer and more sustainable transport systems can become a reality across the continent.

A Special Thanks to the ICTA Secretariat, most particularly to Prof. Simon Oladele Ph.D Professor and International Coordinator for his continuous strong engagement in making the ICTA Conference a greater success every year !
