Supporting safe highway geometric design at ISHGD2022

We were pleased to be a part of the 6th International Symposium on Highway Geometric Design (ISHGD2022), featuring the 6th Urban Street Symposium in Amsterdam last week.

The Symposium was held from 26-29 June and, held every 5 years, aims to encourage the continuous improvement of highway geometric design.

With the theme “Smart Highway and Street Design, Ready for the Future”, ISHGD2022 focussed on the latest breakthrough practices relating to highway engineering in their different life phases, including daily operational effects and safe highway designs.

iRAP Global Technical Director James Bradford moderated the session on “Challenges and Innovation in Traffic Safety Evaluation and Prediction” and took the opportunity to share Avaliação por estrelas para designs (SR4D) with participants.

SR4D is a process and evidence-based programme of applications informed by the iRAP Methodology which enable the objective measure, and improvement, of the level of road safety ‘built in’ to a road design for vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, pedestrians and cyclists, before the commencement of civil works.

SR4D is already in use in 38 countries and enables road engineers and designers, municipalities and road authorities, funding agencies and governments to make roads safer.

Star Rating for Designs will be essential to supporting countries to achieve the United Nations Global Road Safety Performance Targets, especially Alvo 3 to ensure all new roads are built to a 3-star or better standard for all road users.

See the ISHGD2022 programme aqui which included more than 150 papers presented from 35 different countries.

The event was hosted by Association Infra Design and TRB, with the support of ARCADIS, Autodesk, Sidra Solutions and Transoft Solutions.
