iRAP ondersteunt de VN-decennium voor duurzaam transport 2026-2035 and a newly launched six-part Webinar Training Series led by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) to explore the six interconnected focus areas of the Decade’s Implementation Plan.
The series will bring together Member States, UN agencies, development banks and other stakeholders to strengthen knowledge, build capacity and share practical approaches to accelerating sustainable transport action.
The six focus areas are:
- Ensure Access to Sustainable Transport for All
- Enhance Efficiency and Promote Sustainable Connectivity and Logistics
- Advance Low- or Zero-Carbon, Resilient and Environmentally Sound Transport Systems
- Shape People-Centred Urban Mobility and Liveable Cities
- Make Transport Safe and Secure
- Leverage Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Transport
Webinar 1: Ensure Access to Sustainable Transport for All
The first webinar in the series was hosted yesterday on Focus Area 1: Ensure Access to Sustainable Transport for All. The discussion examined what widens access in practice across Asia and the Pacific: closing first- and last-mile gaps, strengthening rural–urban connectivity, keeping walking, cycling, and public transport within reach of low-income and underserved communities, applying universal design, and planning for personal safety and security.
Hosted by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the session explored the support available to act on those approaches, including the ADB Green Roads Toolkits and capacity-building initiatives and knowledge products from the Walk21 Foundation, the International Road Federation, the International Association of Public Transport, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, and FIKA.
Participants heard how the 82 Sustainable Transport Action Commitments, launched with the Decade in December 2025, are being put to work, and how implementers can engage with the institutions behind them.
Alice Yiu, Head of Advocacy and Outreach of the International Road Federation (IRF) shared the joint commitment of a coalition of global partners led by the IRF, and including iRAP, Arup, Australische Nationale Organisatie voor Transportonderzoek (NTRO), Wereldwijde alliantie van ngo's voor verkeersveiligheid, International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC), ORIS En World Wildlife Fund aimed at accelerating the transition toward road systems that are more inclusive, safer, greener and more efficient for all.
As part of the commitment, a Roadmaps for Change series will be published outlining policy actions, technical standards and tools, replicable practices, innovation and indicators of progress, helping countries and institutions to benchmark their efforts and identify practical next steps.
iRAP is leading on the Roadmap for Safer Road Infrastructure due for launch later this year.
For iRAP and our global partner network, safe roads are a must in achieving the Decade goals. A genuinely sustainable transport system protects everyone that uses it. Ensuring that streets, roads and highways are rated at least 3-stars (out of a total of 5 stars) and are fundamentally safe for all expected modes of travel, abilities, and journeys is essential.
The Decade of Sustainable Transport Webinar Series will provide an important platform for sharing knowledge, strengthening collaboration and turning the Decade’s ambitions into action – to promote safe, inclusive, green and efficient transportation systems globally.
