Governments, civil society, technical experts and the private sector will come together at United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday 21 July for the Commitments in Action Roundtable: Multistakeholder Accountability for Safer Roads, een officieel nevenevenement van de 2026 UN High-level Meeting on Road Safety.
Co-hosted by the FIA Stichting, de Wereldwijde Alliantie van Ngo's voor Verkeersveiligheid, International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP), en African Road Safety Observatory, the interactive session will focus on a simple but powerful message: commitments alone do not save lives – accountability does.
As the global community enters the critical second half of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030, the event will explore how transparent evidence, independent data and multi-stakeholder collaboration are helping transform political commitments into measurable, lifesaving outcomes.
The event, from 1:15pm to 2:30pm in CR6, UN Headquarters, will begin with a discussion on the role of accountability in achieving the 2030 global road safety targets, followed by a dynamic and interactive roundtable featuring two-minute interventions from governments and road safety leaders showcasing successful commitments in action.
Participants will share practical, high-impact examples of:
- Government leadership through national accountability mechanisms that are reducing road trauma.
- The use of independent road safety assessments and data to monitor infrastructure improvements.
- Civil society’s role in moving from advocacy to implementation monitoring.
- Private sector leadership through transparent safety commitments and reporting.

Over de Hoge Bijeenkomst van de VN inzake Verkeersveiligheid
A United Nations High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety will be held at UN Headquarters in New York on July 20-21, 2026. Convened by the President of the UN General Assembly and the World Health Organization, the theme is ‘Scaling up and accelerating implementation of commitments to halving road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030.’
The event will bring Heads of state and government, ministers, officials and experts together from governments, the UN, civil society, academia, the private sector and philanthropic foundations to advance progress in meeting the goal of halving road deaths and injuries by 2030 that was agreed in the VN-decennium voor actie voor verkeersveiligheid 2021-2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The 2-day event will be live-streamed online. It builds on the Politieke Verklaring van de Bijeenkomst op Hoog Niveau inzake Verkeersveiligheid adopted by the UN General Assembly in June 2022, and the Vierde Wereldministeriële Conferentie inzake Verkeersveiligheid held in Morocco in February 2025.
A concise and action-orientated declaration will be agreed in advance by intergovernmental negotiation.
Een notitie van de Secretaris-Generaal van de VN, getiteld ‘Verbetering van de wereldwijde verkeersveiligheid’ was released on February 13, 2026. The report notes that road traffic injuries remain a major global health and development challenge, and that road safety must be institutionalized as a long-term priority, with robust agencies, strategic planning and measurable targets in place across all countries, and supported by the private sector, civil society and youth movements regardless of income level.
