Vehicle speeds play a major role in the likelihood of a crash and in the severity of a crash\u2014for all road users. \u200bSpeed is the focus of one of the UN’s 12 Global Road Safety Performance Targets<\/a>. Target 6 aims to halve the proportion of vehicles travelling over the posted speed limit and achieve a reduction in speed- related injuries and fatalities by\u00a02030.<\/p>\n

Speed has a central role within iRAP\u2019s models.\u00a0Speed analysis produced by the models can enable the setting of speed limits and enforcement policy to improve safety and reduce road deaths and serious injuries.<\/p>\n

The Global Study on the Economic Benefits of Reducing Speeds<\/em><\/strong> is a World Bank GRSF grant funded research project on the costs and benefits of speed reduction with the aim of providing an evidence base that can be used to inform decision making on speed management on inter-urban roads in low and middle income countries across the globe.<\/p>\n

TRL has developed the \u00a0Speed Management Assessment Tool (SMAT)<\/em><\/strong> as part of a project funded by National Highways. The Speed Management Assessment Tool (SMAT) utilises iRAP road data and Star Ratings to identify where speed limits and traffic speeds are inappropriate for the road risk levels.<\/p>\n

TRL\u2019s\u00a0Speed Management Tool to Deliver Road Casualty Reduction<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is a World Bank GRSF grant funded project working with stakeholders in Ghana, Nepal and Fiji, to develop the best ways to apply a TRL tool to control traffic speeds and limits effectively, to result in major reductions in fatally and seriously injured road users. The tool uses iRAP and other data with an emphasis on reducing barriers to roll out to multiple low and middle income countries.<\/p>\n
