The tool allows a spot evaluation of the different available facilities for a given road, rather than a network or route-based evaluation that can be achieved using the <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/rap-tools\/\">full iRAP methodology<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irap.org\/cyclerap\">CycleRAP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The tool uses <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/rap-tools\/infrastructure-ratings\/star-ratings\/\">safety Star Ratings<\/a>, together with a age and ability criteria, to compare bicycle and pedestrian facilities, such as paths, crossings and low traffic neighbourhoods (LTN). Star Ratings are a measure of the level of safety which is \u2018built-in\u2019 to the road.\u00a0 Five-star roads are the safest while one-star roads are the least safe.<\/p>\n<p>The iRAP Star Rating Model was developed by the world\u2019s leading road infrastructure research organisations and is fully documented on the <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/methodology\/\">iRAP website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Age and ability criteria for road safety treatments<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Age and ability criteria, based on level of protection from traffic, speed and the number of lanes of the road, evaluates suitability of three categories of treatments for different types of bicyclists and pedestrians:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cycleways, footways and shared use paths<\/li>\n<li>Crossings<\/li>\n<li>Low Traffic Neighbourhoods<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The criteria are used to categorise a facility into a \u2018stress\u2019 level, and broadly align with those used by the <a href=\"https:\/\/peterfurth.sites.northeastern.edu\/level-of-traffic-stress\/\">Level of Traffic Stress (LTS) rating system<\/a> originally developed by <a href=\"https:\/\/transweb.sjsu.edu\/research\/Low-Stress-Bicycling-and-Network-Connectivity\">Mekuria, Furth and Nixon (2012)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Low stress: where a child of ~8 years of age or a person with a disability would feel confident using the facility independently<\/li>\n<li>Medium stress: where parents accompanying children, elderly persons or adults unfamiliar with the traffic situation would feel confident using the facility<\/li>\n<li>High stress: where only able-bodied adults who are familiar with the traffic situation would feel confident using the facility, and<\/li>\n<li>Very high stress: where only those who are very familiar with traffic conditions and not sensitive to high traffic speeds would feel confident using the facility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/irap.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/LTS.png&#8221; title_text=&#8221;LTS&#8221; show_in_lightbox=&#8221;on&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.12.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.12.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>This tool is currently being trialled in the UK.
