global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>iRAP congratulates Gambia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motwi.gov.gm\/\">Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure<\/a> and the Gambian Road Safety Committee on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motwi.gov.gm\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-10\/The%20Gambian%20Road%20Safety%20Strategy%20to%202030%20(Revised)-converted.pdf\">2020-2030 National Road Safety Strategy<\/a> with a 3-star or better targets for national highways aligned to <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/2018\/04\/targets-3-4-what-they-mean-for-safer-roads-globally\/\">UN Global Road Safety Performance Targets 3 and 4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The policy acknowledges a significant deterioration in road safety in Gambia in recent years, creating a heavy burden on Gambia\u2019s economy and its people.<\/p>\n<p>Based on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaccinesforroads.org\/irap-big-data-tool\/\"> WHO Data<\/a> over 600 people die on Gambia&#8217;s roads annually and an additional 6,000 people are seriously injured, costing the Gambian people an estimated 7.3% of annual GDP.<\/p>\n<p>The Strategy calls for a methodical approach for strategic projects which build Government and community capacity, tackle high priority safety issues in a sustainable way, and monitor and review progress.<\/p>\n<p>Interim targets set in the policy to achieve a 50% reduction in fatal and serious injuries by 2030 include:<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/irap.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Gambia-targets.jpg&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;][\/et_pb_button][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.12.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>iRAP stands ready to support the Gambian Government, local road safety stakeholders and development banks working in the country with the free <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/methodology\/\">iRAP methodology,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/rap-tools\/\">tools<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/training\/\">training<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/resources-for-raps\/\">programmatic support <\/a>to achieve 3-star or better highways, strong national capacity for safer road infrastructure, and improved pedestrian safety measures, such as around schools through our <a href=\"https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/\">Star Rating for Schools Programme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaccinesforroads.org\/irap-big-data-tool\/\">iRAP\u2019s Safety Insights Explorer<\/a>, improving the safety of Gambia&#8217;s road infrastructure by 2030 has enormous potential &#8211; the saving of an estimated 267 lives per year and more than 58,700 lives and serious injuries over the 20-year life of treatments with an economic benefit of over USD$720 million to the country&#8217;s economy &#8211;
