The tragedy of death and injury impacts every community on earth. Based on current trends 500 million people will suffer life-changing brain, spinal, limb, and internal injuries or be killed in road crashes between now and 2030. The economic cost will be more than US$25 trillion. Almost half of those killed will be vulnerable road users \u2013 motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Low-income and middle-income countries, where nine out of ten of the world\u2019s road deaths occur, will suffer the most impact from this global road safety crisis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Solution<\/strong><br \/>Ai-RAP has the potential to reduce the time and effort required to undertake road safety assessments, reduce costs, improve accuracy and ideally make data available for every road and every journey on earth. The Ai-RAP Omdena initiative aims to unlock this potential with the following goals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Source geo-located crash data and produce iRAP Risk Maps of the historical crashes per kilometre and crashes per kilometre travelled for each road user<\/li>\n<li>Source road attribute, traffic flow, and speed data to the iRAP global standard and map the safety performance and Star Rating of more than 100 million km of road worldwide<\/li>\n<li>Produce repeatable road infrastructure key performance indicators that can form the basis of annual performance tracking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Project<\/strong><br \/>The project team will analyze the problem from various angles to prioritize for impact and feasibility. Different task groups will identify innovative ways to collect and augment multiple data sources. Through Omdena\u2019s unique collaborative processes and fast iteration cycles, best-fit models will be built and presented back to iRAP.<\/p>\n<p>Omdena runs 8-week intensive AI projects to tackle real-world problems through global collaboration. Its network includes 1,550 collaborators across 84 countries working on 34 projects involving 350,000 hours of work.<\/p>\n<p>iRAP CEO Rob McInerney said, \u201cThis project is hugely exciting. The Omdena-iRAP Challenge will unleash the equivalent of 400 weeks of collaborative and focused problem-solving of the world\u2019s top AI experts crammed into 8 short weeks.Together with iRAP\u2019s global partnerships and Star Rating models, Ai-RAP has the potential to put this road safety data at the fingertips of road authorities, policy-makers, investors, and road users worldwide.
