{"id":84487,"date":"2026-01-07T05:12:50","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T05:12:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/irap.org\/?p=84487"},"modified":"2026-01-08T04:01:01","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T04:01:01","slug":"new-zealands-highest-risk-highways-safer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irap.org\/pt\/2026\/01\/new-zealands-highest-risk-highways-safer\/","title":{"rendered":"As rodovias de maior risco da Nova Zel\u00e2ndia agora s\u00e3o mais seguras."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;2px||||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.co.nz\/about\/aa-research-foundation\/\">AA Research Foundation<\/a> has evaluated safety outcomes, with impressive results, for 32 of New Zealand\u2019s highest risk highways, comparing to 20 years ago when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiwirap.org.nz\/\">KiwiRAP<\/a> assessments were first completed.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis, prepared by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsp.com\/\">WSP<\/a>, compared crash data for the period 2017 \u2013 2023 (excluding 2020-2021) with pre-assessments crash data for 2002-2006.<\/p>\n<p>The results show improved safety on the highest risk highways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>20 fewer fatal crashes per year across the highways despite traffic increasing about 50% on the routes.<\/li>\n<li>A reduction in fatal and serious crashes on average by more than 20% on the high collective risk roads, compared to a reduction of less than 5% on other rural roads.<\/li>\n<li>Nine highways saw crash reductions of more than 50%, while six highways saw an increase in crashes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiwirap.org.nz\/\">KiwiRAP (New Zealand Road Assessment Programme)<\/a>\u00a0initiative was introduced in 2008 as a partnership between the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.co.nz\/\">NZ Automobile Association<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.transport.govt.nz\/\">Ministry of Transport<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nzta.govt.nz\/\">NZ Transport Agency<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.co.nz\/\">ACC<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.police.govt.nz\/\">NZ Police<\/a>. It aimed to assess the safety of, and crash rates on, the country\u2019s highways to help focus safety efforts and investments to reduce road trauma.<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand\u2019s 35 highest risk highways were identified, 26 of which have undergone significant safety improvements over time.<\/p>\n<p>Dylan Thomsen, Manager of Communications, Safety and Research at AA Transport said, \u201cThe good news is that yes safety has improved on New Zealand\u2019s highways dramatically from 20 years ago. We are having a lot more driving taking place, and a lot less crashes on our highest risk highways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Between 2009 and 2023, the biggest safety gains in terms of fatal and serious crashes were seen on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>State Highway 20b to Auckland Airport &#8211; 86% reduction in fatal and serious crashes<\/li>\n<li>State Highway 2 from Bethlehem to Mount Maunganui &#8211; 78% reduction<\/li>\n<li>State Highway 1 in Christchurch &#8211; 64% reduction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/irap.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/NZ-Crash-Analysis-2025-result.png&#8221; title_text=&#8221;NZ Crash Analysis 2025 result&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/irap.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/NZ-Crash-Analysis-2025-result-2.png&#8221; title_text=&#8221;NZ Crash Analysis 2025 result 2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>The research shows that KiwiRAP has been effective at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identifying high-risk road sections where investment in infrastructure can significantly reduce risk.<\/li>\n<li>Focusing improvement strategies on high-risk locations to reduce deaths and serious injuries by around 30% on the targeted sections.<\/li>\n<li>Identifying links where no investment (or minimal investment) has resulted in a consistently high collective risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With New Zealand\u2019s road toll per capita basis heading to its lowest point in a century, AA Research Foundation highlights that the KiwiRAP strategy identified in the 2000&#8217;s could be the key to lowering it further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to keep investing in wherever those highest risks on our highway network are now.
