Many others are permanently injured. Children walking to school are particularly vulnerable. In many countries, most crashes involving children happen within 500m from the school, many of them at entrance and exit hours.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/2023\/08\/what-makes-a-3-star-or-better-school-journey\/#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/2023\/08\/what-makes-a-3-star-or-better-school-journey\/#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/2023\/08\/what-makes-a-3-star-or-better-school-journey\/#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/2023\/08\/what-makes-a-3-star-or-better-school-journey\/#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/2023\/08\/what-makes-a-3-star-or-better-school-journey\/#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The decision to walk to school can be influenced by the perception of students, parents and the broader school community about road safety, including the presence (or absence) of road infrastructure elements. Sidewalks, compact and controlled intersections, crossing facilities and vehicle speeds impact how safe \u2013 or how unsafe \u2013 pedestrians feel on their way to the school and their decision to walk or not.<a href=\"https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/2023\/08\/what-makes-a-3-star-or-better-school-journey\/#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a>\u00a0These infrastructure elements also have a direct impact on safety performance.<\/p>\n<p>SR4S is an evidence-based way to measure, monitor and communicate the risk pedestrians are exposed on a school journey. Since its development, it has been used\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/partners\/\">by organisations worldwide<\/a>\u00a0to assess more than 1,200 schools in 67 countries. From these, more than 400 schools have been upgraded, 286 of each have been assessed both before and after the interventions with SR4S.<\/p>\n<p>The recently updated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/safe-schools-tracker\/\">Safe Schools Tracker<\/a>\u00a0provides insights into the road infrastructure interventions that have been implemented to achieve a safety rating of 3-stars or better for children walking to and from school. The Tracker includes locations in 20 countries that affect more than 120,000 students. The 3-star or better locations not only\u00a0<em>feel<\/em>\u00a0safer and therefore can encourage more walking, but they are also objectively much less risky than before.<\/p>\n<p>These assessments show that:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 average star rating more than doubled, going from 1.7 to 3.7 stars out of 5<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 prior to the upgrades, only 22% of the locations were rated 3-stars or better<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 locations with 30km\/h or lower speed limit increased from 29% to 85%<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 locations with speed management (or traffic calming) increased from 17% to 74%<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 locations with pedestrian crossing facilities increased from 45% to 96% of the improved locations<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 locations with sidewalks increased from 70% to 86%.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the Safe Schools Tracker shows that thanks to the efforts of SR4S partners worldwide, more than 90,000 students have seen key 1- and 2-star locations eliminated from around their schools.<\/p>\n<p>The insights available in the tool are cause for celebration \u2013 every step our partners make in improving speeds and infrastructure around schools is a step towards saving lives and preventing injuries.<\/p>\n<p>The Safe Schools Tracker shows not just what can be done in theory \u2013 but what is actually being done all around the world and will inspire even greater efforts.<\/p>\n<p>SR4S has benefited from the support of founding sponsor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fedexcares.com\/\">FedEx<\/a>, major donor the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiafoundation.org\/\">FIA Foundation<\/a>, programme partners<a href=\"https:\/\/www.3m.com\/\">\u00a03M\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prudentialplc.com\/en\/prudence-foundation\/\">Prudence Foundation<\/a>, and lead partners,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/aip-foundation.org\/\">AIP Foundation<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.childhealthinitiative.org\/\">Child Health Initiative<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.easst.co.uk\/\">EASST<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fia.com\/\">FIA<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gonzalorodriguez.org\/\">Fundaci\u00f3n Gonzalo Rodr\u00edguez<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadsafetyngos.org\/\">Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grsproadsafety.org\/\">GRSP<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irfnet.ch\/\">IRF<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.safekids.org\/\">Safe Kids Worldwide<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youthforroadsafety.org\/\">\u00a0YOURS<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wri.org\/\">World Resources Institute<\/a>.
